Humanity: How to Help a Child
Big Brother and Big Sisters of America
One way you can really impact your community by helping a child is to become involved in the Big Brother Big Sisters of America. There are so many children that need someone to care about them. They need a relationship with someone they can count on and someone that can guide them There are many ways to help through this great organization.
How to Volunteer
First, you can volunteer to be a big brother or a big sister is you have time to make this commitment. I have known people involved in this mentoring program, and they have revealed they think they gained as much from their relationship with their little brother or sister as did the child. It is truly a fulfilling youth program. Whether you play sports together, a game of checkers or take them out to eat pizza, you are making an impact on that child. There are 21,000 boys waiting for a big brother at this time. They need men and women, as well as, people that speak Spanish.
If you can donate a few hours a couple of times a month, the impact for that child is significant. Anyone can volunteer. You will be interviewed, asked to provide references and go through a background check for obvious reasons. If you are unable to be a big brother or sister, you can also donate money as they are a non-profit corporation. They have a newsletter that tells of the children and the impact of the program. They also have a Facebook and Twitter page.
Big Brother Real Life Story
The main website tells some of the real life stories. The children are primarily from one parent homes or sometimes from orphanages. In one of the stories, the mother was concerned about her son, Jon, as he had no male role model. The man, Jesse, who answered this call, is an intelligence officer in the U.S. Air Force and now Jon has been to his first major league baseball game. Jesse had moved across the country away from his family and chose this way to connect with his community. He feels the relationship has allowed for good, open communication and it is rewarding for them both.
Big Sister Real Life Story
In another story a young 23 year old new mother states the ten years in her life where she had a big sister gave her confidence and she made better decisions due to that relationship. She is in dental hygienist school, happily married and has and 18 month old son. This young lady grew up in public housing without a parent, so her Big Sister made a huge impact on her life. When you consider spending a few hours a month for a child with such huge voids in their life, I can not imagine finding any better use of your time.
Big Brothers Big Sisters - Start Something
Children are so precious and you can not always undo psychological damage that happens to so many when they are so young, despite good counseling. There is no greater calling than to help children. Having the privilege of impacting the direction of a young person’s life is certainly an honor.
