Stylish design that fits most modern décor schemes.

This adjustable, hardware mounted safety gate is available in black or white and is designed primarily for use at the top of the stairs as it has no bottom rail that could be a serious trip hazard in this location. It can also be used in other areas of your home, in a hallway or perhaps to avoid a young child coming into the kitchen while you are cooking. These gates are also ideal for keeping pets where you want them to be!

This model is in a stylish design that fits unobtrusively with most modern décor schemes. It is popular with parents because of its one-handed operation and its slim, vertical rails and 30.5" height provide additional safety for toddlers who might try to climb it.

The width is adjustable between 24.75" and 43.5" making it suitable for most homes; there is an optional extension kit available if necessary for wider gaps.

Pros and Cons of the Safeway Safety Gate

  • This gate is very easy to fit. If you do not want to screw into your wooden stair banisters, an optional installation kit from KidCo (purchased separately) avoids the need for this (see below for more detail and video on this).
  • The opening mechanism is easy for an adult to open with one hand but difficult for a child to figure out (or operate) and is ideal for ensuring dogs stay where you want them to be too!
  • The fact that the rails are vertical and the extra height of this gate make it very hard for a child to climb over.

(Slight) Cons:

  • The gate operates in only one direction and does not swing closed automatically.
  • he gate has a strong, metal construction but the mounting brackets are plastic and there have been some reports of these snapping after prolonged use.
  • Although the Safeway safety is easy to install, one useful tip is to mount the hinge side of the gate first and then mark on the opposite side, the position where the gate will be when closed. This avoids the problem that some users found with the locking mounts when following the instructions supplied, that when the gate was lifted at a right angle, it could snap out of position.
  • If you do not purchase the optional installation kit, you may wish to use longer screws than those supplied with this product.

Using the Optional Installation Kit

If you have beautiful banisters on your stairs, you probably do not want to drill holes in them but you will want to ensure that your stairgate, especially at the top of the stairs is fitted correctly and securely.

This is where the KidCo K12 Installation Kit is invaluable. It provides everything you need to safely affix the safety gate to your banisters without any need to drill into your decorative wood. When the stairgate has fulfilled its purpose and the children have grown, the kit can just be removed.

If you have banisters just one side, you will only need one kit as you can mount the other side to a wall. If you have a central stairway with banisters on both sides, you will need two kits.

Designed for use either at the top or the bottom of your stairs and with hardware mounted or pressure mounted designs, it can be used on square posts of up to 3 5/8" or if you have round banister posts, there is an insert included for this purpose.

Everything you need is in the kit, you just need very basic tools to complete the job. See the video on the right for more details.

My Review

Overall, the Safeway safety gate, like all KidCo products, offers excellent value for money, all-round reliability and good design.

It is easy to install, is adjustable for different width requirements and does not have a bottom rail so it does not present a trip hazard. It is so simple to operate with one hand and the gate can be lifted right out of the mounting frame when not in use if required.

I particularly liked the fact that it is very hard for small children to climb, with slim vertical rails and the fact that it is taller than many other models.

Thanks Elizabeth, luckily we live in a Bungalow but if we had stairs, I would certainly need one of these as our dogs are too old to be safe on stairs anymore!

Good to know about this. I don't have children, but we do use these types of gates for our dogs. I may have to check them out!
