No, you can't call 911 because your two year old urinated all over your couch. No, there isn't a support group for moms trying to get their babies to sleep through the night. No, there isn't an "easy button" for parenting. But, there is the next best thing - you can find the support of other moms through a local moms group.
If you are in the Chicago area, there are several mom's groups available for you to join. Mental health experts agree that having the support and encouragement from friends can help make life a little easier. Here are some groups for Chicago area mothers to consider.
Funny MOPS Skit and Song
One superb resource for moms in Chicago is MOPS. It stands for "Mothers of Preschoolers." MOPS is an international organization that provides a "caring atmosphere" to help foster relationships for mothers. Currently t here are five MOPS groups meeting in the Chicago area at churches such as New Life Community Church. There is even a teen MOPS group in Chicago. The whole point of MOPS is to develop relationships and (hopefully) you'll have a warm welcome when you visit the first time.
Another fantastic way to make friends with other moms is through a local Chicago moms club. There is at least one Chicago moms club meeting in the area. On their website it states Mocha Moms "is a national support group for at-home mothers of color who have chosen to modify or eliminate employment outside the home in order to devote more time to their families." If you are a breastfeeding mother, or are pregnant or plan to become pregnant soon, La Leche League might be the group for you. La Leche League offers support for breastfeeding mothers. There are several groups meeting in the Chicago area, one in Beverly, South Side, Lincoln Park, and Northwest Chicago. La Leche League can also be a group for moms interested in attachment parents. Ladies Bible Study Groups
Another great way to find a supportive group of moms is through a Ladies Bible Study group. There are several churches in the area, such as Sheldon Heights Church of Christ that offer Ladies Bible studies. Often these groups will also provide free childcare.
Cafemom is a fabulous social networking site just for moms. There are several Chicago groups listed. While this is primarily online support, they do have occasional real-life meetups as well.
