Grandparenting Your Way

Updated on March 15, 2013

Grandchildren Are Great

You've all heard that when your the grandparent you have the pleasure of sending the children back to their parents when you're done playing with them. It's true. When I had my son it was great when he spent time with his grandparents. I did not worry. I relaxed and went on with what I had planned for the time he spent with them. I just wish I would have had two sets of grandparents to be there for my child. Oh well. We've got to deal with what we've been delt.

Now that I'm a grandmother I see the little children differently. I can play and play and not worry if I'm going to be able to get up in the morning. I don't have to.

When my son and daughter(I refer to my daughter-in-law as my daughter because I never had one of my own until now), come home from going out they look relieved. They look like they have a life aside from their daughter.I feel so good to be able to give that feeling to them.

Before I even became a grandparent people told me not to be the babysitter. I wasn't sure what that meant until my daughter asked me to think about watching her daughter while she went to work. Admirable of course, I must admit. However, I am just getting going on my career after spending 18 years at home with my son. I had to stop this situation in the pass. That is, that I had to say "no". I didn't want her to think I didn't want to have anything to do with the child, but I had to stand my ground. I had to put my career first for once. I know I still can be a great grandmother. I will be better at it if I'm happy otherwise.
