My Idea of a Happy Family

My idea of a happy family is one in which all the members recognise the individuality of each other's character and personality. No two human beings are alike and although members of one family naturally have many similar traits, each one of them still remains a person with an independent identity. A happy family is one in which all dealings are based on this indisputable fact.

Fathers should not expect their sons to be exactly like them in every way and mothers should not expect their daughters to be their clones. At the same time, children should never forget their duty towards their parents and should always respect and love them.

In a happy family, one expects freedom of speech. Each member should be allowed to give his opinion without hesitation. Of course, certain common rules of action have to be laid down and a code of conduct insisted upon. The experience of one's parents and grandparents should be acknowledged but at the same time elders should be conscious of the generation gap and adapt themselves accordingly. A little broad-mindedness and tolerance goes a long way to ensure healthy, cheerful relationships.

A happy family eats together, prays together and laughs together. All its members believe in the good old virtues of love and sacrifice, and have a sharing, caring attitude towards each other. There is a feeling of togetherness and belonging and a strong sense of loyalty. They stand by each other through thick and thin, and act as pillars of strength in times of misfortune.

So what's your idea of a happy family? We all readers will love to know!

A Very well written hub. My view is that a lot of families fail since they have a lack of family time.

      Hi Swetankraj

" A little broad-mindedness and tolerance goes a long way to ensure healthy, cheerful relationships." So true!

Family members should support each other but respect each others individuality.

      Voted up and awesome

      Take care :)

It sounds more like a fairy tale to me, because in reality you hardly find such family, where there is forever harmony etc. I personally also feel that it is important that within a family you also learn how to deal with differences and struggles and learn to apologize. If you don't learn it at home - where will you learn those things then? Also, being angry and upset is also important for a good mental health, as well as learning how to deal with it in society. The first place to learn all these things should be home.

Swetankraj, I lived in a joint family with grandparents and uncles(from my both my parents' side) till I was out on my own due to my job which required me to keep moving to different places.

I can vouch for the fact that there is nothing to beat a joint family system. As a child, the guidance one gets from grandparents cannot be got from anywhere else.

Times have changed, joint families are becoming rarer but given the choice, I still would want to live in one.

      Great hub. Voted up.

Good ideals of a happy family. Unfortunately with the hustle bustle of life and materialism...families tend to put their near n dear ones second. Love tends to break apart.

      Amen to the above ideals.

@ Movie Master thanks for your valuable comment and yes you are correct that there are many families they don't even eat meals together. Surprisingly but the ratio is 100:10 in terms and count for such families.

It's surprising how many families don't even do something as simple as 'eating meals' together!

Nice family values here, thank you and voted up.
