OMG, twins! What should I do now?

Updated on March 18, 2010

As a mother of four yr old twins, I still can not believe I was pregnant with twins. My morning sickness lasted all day, and I was convinced something was wrong, being that I had kids already. I found out I was carrying twins at 11 weeks. The doctor said I was measuring at an estimate of 16 weeks, so he did a sonogram and Surprise!! There were two! I swear I had the same facial expression for about two hours, lol!!! If you are pregnant with twins, get all the sleep you can while you're pregnant!!! I had my precious darlings at 35 weeks. They weighed in at 5lbs 4oz and 6lbs 1oz. Boy/girl. I had to leave one behind in the NICU, that was so hard. I was so ready to start my life with my babies. Well, I needed that 3 weeks of sleep at night, because when my little girl came home, I didn't get any sleep at all. My twins were on opposite schedules for about the first six months. One day I just broke down and cried. I loved my babies, but I was living off of about three hours asleep each night. It is very important to have a support system. It is fun and hectic at the same time!

One thing I have learned is always buy two of every single thing you buy for the next four years at least! My twins always want the same toys, but that is expected at their age. When they are first born, take naps whenever you can, regardless of the time of day. Make bottles ahead of time, that way you won't feel pressured if your twins happen to cry at the same time. Breastfeeding twins didn't last long for me, it was to demanding on my body, and they needed additional vitamins, so I just gave up on that. I always bathed my twins at the same time, it saves on the water bill, and it was more convenient for me. When they were old enough to sit up, I bathed them right in the kitchen sink!! One on each side, and so much easier than bending down to the tub!

I also let my twins sleep together until they were about 6 months, around this time you have to keep a close eye on them when they are awake in the crib. They are now old enough to hurt each other! They can now hit each other in the head with their bottle or toys, and they are now old enough to crawl right over the other twin!! My twins would coo and giggle to each other, I use to think that was so beautiful! Please buy yourself a camcorder, if you do not have one. This is one of the greatest adventures you will ever experience.

This is my first hub, so it is a little brief, however I would be happy to answer any questions, regarding twins up to the age of four. I am so looking forward to them starting school next year, although I know I will cry like a little baby!! I am terrified of the teenage years, but who wouldn't be?

My twins are going to be four in a couple of weeks, so we are in the same boat! I feel like the hardest part has been done, they dress themselves, go to the toilet themselves and finally sleep through... and they play a lot together, no need for playdates...

I really enjoyed your hub, looking forward to reading more!

If it would've happened twice for me, I probably would've cried also! I am sorry to hear that you are infertile, thank you for sharing!

I'm a nanny for two sets of twins in the same family. I've always secretly wanted to have twins of my own (I'm infertile), but your story made me laugh. The people I babysit for, they were excited for the first two, the second set caused tears and shock! I love hearing the story even though they have shared it many times!

thank you fastfreta, and congratulations Naebop. That is so true about children close in age, they do not even come close to raising twins!

I am happy to see another mother of twins sharing her experiences with the hub family. So many people feel they know what it is like to have twins becuase they have children close in age. But as you know it is nothing like that at all. I have 4 month old twins. They are my little dolls right now. I don't know what I would do without them. They are currenlty in the cooing stages. One of my twins is already teething. It just seems like I just had them. As I ramble on I just wanted to say congrats on raising your twins to 4 yrs and I wish you the best in the future years to come. Feel free to follow me as I explore the new beginnings of parenthood. I'm sure you will have some good advise.

      Take care.
