Paddle Your Own Canoe

Updated on November 3, 2019

I am a wide reader, I can finish a 400-page novel in one to two sitting, about 2-3 hours only.

My Father's Advice

Since I was young, my father always says to me as well as to my siblings, we have to paddle our own canoe. Technically, I do not know then, what's the meaning of those words. How can I paddle my own canoe if I don't have my own paddle as well as my own canoe. We are living in the city, so, technically, canoe is not visible in our place. We can only find the canoe in the river, and we are far away from the river.

What is a paddle?

Based on the Google search (01 Nov 2019), paddle means "a short pole with a broad blade at one or both ends, used without an oarlock to move of a small boat or canoe through the water."

In contrary, a verb meaning, paddle means "beating someone with a paddle as punishment."

Technically, the second meaning, my father did not use that for his kids to received a punishment. He just shouted.

What is a canoe?

Still based on Google search (01 Nov 2019), canoe means "a narrow, keelless boat with pointed ends, propelled by a paddle or paddles."

Basically, I do not see the relationship of what my father means with this canoe before.

Paddle in a canoe?

Now, I am already 42 years old, my father is already in Heaven. Few minutes while I am conceptualizing what to write here in Hubpages, I decided this simple phrase that my father always reminding us more than two decades ago.

Paddle means, you are the one will do all the things to be successful. You will become the pilot of your own success. Canoe will stand as your mode of success. What will be your success to be? Is it being a storyteller, a manager, a librarian, a writer, a doctor, or a soldier? Whatever, you wanted to be, it is all in your hands to decide. You can decide to paddle to the left or paddle to right or paddle both?

When I was young?

When I was young, I wanted to be a doctor. Maybe because I want to treat the patients to heal. Until the next years, I wanted to be a soldier. Until few more years, I wanted to become a teacher.

Then, after my bad experience with a librarian when I was in a 2nd Grade level, I was too disappointed not to become a librarian soon but unfortunately, I do not know what happened that day after high school graduation. I enrolled for a program "Bachelor in Library and Information Science".

Although, I became a Librarian now, my Grade School Librarian then slapped my fingernails because of my bad attitude while I was in the Library.

I am Librarian by Profession

Who am I now? I am a Librarian by profession. I am the one who decided to become a librarian right now. Am I?

As far as I remember, my university that I enrolled forced me to select my top 3 choice of programs to enroll. My first choice was Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. Then, my second choice was Bachelor of Library and Information Science. And my last choice was, Bachelor of Arts in History.

Why I do chose those programs?

I prefer to enroll in Journalism because I want to be a journalist someday. I wanted to interview some of the known armed militants in the mountains (New People's Army). Since, the availability of my first choice was not good because the only available class schedules was evening time. And my father said, "I will not allow you to have classes during evening!"

Even if I am not that happy to accept it, I was forced to enroll with my second choice. And making sure that I will shift to my original choice after a semester. But unfortunately, after a semester, the dean of the College of Arts, did not allow me to shift to another program because of some issues with my grades.

So, I decided to continue my Librarianship program. Until, next semester ends, I failed one subject that became a hindrance not to shift again. I feel disappointment with that. Need to pass that failed subject first before I am going to allowed to shift my preferred program. And nothing happens, it made until third year to accept that I will become a Librarian in the future.

Being a Professional Librarian

After graduation, my first job was being a Law Library Assistant, then transferred to as a School Assistant Librarian for a decade. Then, became a School Librarian, a Medical Librarian, a College Librarian, a Library Instructor, a Library Science Textbook writer and now out of the blue as a Customer Service Representative of Telecommunication Business Processing Outsourcing Industry after 21 years of being in the field of Librarianship.

Planning to resign as a Customer Service Representative for few days from now, and go back to what I want to be done. I am going to paddle my own canoe to my choice of being a Librarian or a Library Science Instructor in the field of Librarianship.

Paddle your own canoe

What is your greatest dream when you were young?

A canoe is just like our dream that we ride on. And using the paddle, we are giving our best shot to achieve our dream.
