Poems for Chelsea

Updated on March 30, 2011

by Sydney U.

I am a RealHousewife. I have three real children. Sydney is my middle child. She is eleven and she wants to be a writer some day.

I am a huge fan of sueroy333. Her daughter, Chelsea, is also a writer. Chelsea had an assigment and she posted it online. Chelsea wrote about tornadoes. Sydney is very interested in tornadoes and she was excited by Chelsea's writing. She wanted to introduce herself to Chelsea and share her poems that she has just written for a homework assignment.

So, I'm turning it over to Sydney today so that she and Chelsea can learn from each other. I hope that you enjoy their homework as much as we did!

Hi Chelsea, my name is Sydney and I am 11 years old. I am in 5th grade. I thought your tornado interview was funny and now I am your new fan! I had an assignment at school and I had to write 5 poems. One of each kind of poem. I hope you like my poems as much as I liked your interview. It was great! I laughed a lot!

******

Haiku

On a chilly night

People make some apple pies

Smell that awesome smell.

*****

Limerick

There once was a talking pair of shorts

They liked to go snort, snort

Some were green but some were red

Most liked to sleep in bed with old brother ned

Then one day, they said, "Lets go vandalize the court!"

                                                   Pepper

                                      Spicy, eating, dissolving

                                              White, Puny

                                                    Salt

*****

5 Senses Poem

Well, I have to say that's one of the best haikus I've ever read!

    I didn't get the Limerick - I'm a dummy.

The Diamante was excellent. I love that it started with pepper and ended with salt.

The 5 senses poem had me drooling for cotton candy! and a carnival. Good imagery.

The Cinquain was a delight for my appetite! I don't usually like ice cream, but weirdly enough, I do love a good brain freeze.

Poetry is one of my specialties, so I can critique with meaning. You did good, kid.

All you writers: I let Sydney read your comments while she ate her breakfast. She looked at me when she was finished and her smile was huge! She said, "I like these people!"

Thank you everybody - this has made her homework fun for us! You guys are awesome!

She certainly has potential! If she wants to be a writer, poetry is a great place to start. It makes you think.

Warning! Poetry does NOT sell well! Poetry is very personal and it's main intention is to provoke imagery. For this reason, it teaches us to "feel" the words.

Also, writers Write. So write often and then even more often!

  • profile image

    Motown2Chitown 6 years ago

Very true, Austin! But poets deserve the respect for being able to so concisely provoke imagery! I second the write a lot, and then write some more, though!

Austinstar - Oh she's in to it too:). She has written many short stories (that actually have a plot! She adored your comments! I am so glad Chelsea and Sueroy started this project.

I also have to tell you, Syd is the quiet child. I think she found a way to express herself and it makes her feel happy. I love that!

  • RealHousewife profile image

I agree MO! I think the trick is you have to be smart. The smart poets can use those words to play tricks with your head. Like Austin said - writing poetry does make you think! I have trouble just doing that part some days! Lol!

  • Austinstar profile image

Austinstar 6 years ago from Somewhere in the universe

Yep, gotta love that! Being able to express yourself is awesome. Some people have to hold it inside. Makes them explode and that's a big mess to clean.

Another good point! And I bet that is true too, REALLY! If I didn't write - daily, I would explode too because my head would be so fat from not purging it!

I'm going to school and I'm very excited because I have a new mission. I am helping a friend and I am doing some gritty research:). Fun!!

Sydney- What a talented kid you are!

Thank you so much for sharing your poems with us.

    My favorite was the Diamante!

I'm terrible at poetry and have a great respect for anyone who can do it... esp. do it well. And you, my dear, do it well!! Awesome!!

You have definately got a writer on your hands. I remember doing poetry like that when I was younger. It was always a special treat to do something a little different. She has got talent; She has got wit; she has got a way with words! With that she will go far.

Keep up the good work Sydney - My favorite was the dynamite. I love how it looks! I might have to do some of those! :)

Homework should be fun! Writing should be fun! Way to go! Has your teacher talked about Bio-Poems? It is 8 or 9 lines using different parts of speech to brainstorm a variety of thoughts about likes, traits, fears, etc.

I don't know if my teacher has talked about bio-poems, but I don't think so. I wrote more poems. This sounds like it would be a fun one to write!:) I'll try to find out more about those.

This has been a very cool experience for her - thank you so very much! I told her about you - that is what she meant by the "cool person!" she really loved learning about your teaching and wants me to let her read your hubs now too! Hey Sydney!

Nice job hun ~ the heck with the rest of your school classes, just keep writing!

Well, I don't really mean that. But do continue to use your creativity in all you do. It is a wonderful gift!

I'd like to see a poem with say 2 lines that you start and then ask your Mom to write 2 lines after that ~ and then you write another 2 lines and so on and keep building on each others writing. I bet you girls come up with something awesome!

Good luck Sydney! (and u2 Kel)

Great Sydney! I'm curious to see what you come up with! Write a couple lines, possibly rhyming (but not necessary) ~ then give it to your Mom and don't say anything, just let her build on it with two more lines. Then she'll give it back to you without giving suggestions and let you build on what she wrote, and so on.

Here's a few ideas to start with but please don't use them if you don't like them. It's just to get you thinking :)

It's not that easy being the middle child

Some people might think I'm a little wild

    or

My Mom is a real housewife

This is her purpose in life (sry Kel)

    or

I really don't want to learn today

I want to go outside and play

Good Luck ~ Have Fun Syd!

Isn't it! I love it! We are going to do it! Syd went to tumbling practice with Maddy - guess what? She just called - Dave is going to get them early, Maddy has vasovagal syndrome - which is a fancy way of saying, she passes out for no apparent reason, and she is super dizzy and feels like she is going to pass out. You two!

And look at you - in the hospital and still working!

Vaso Vagal syndrome. Sounds like low blood sugar to me, but how can she have that when she has such a sweet mom?

  • RealHousewife profile image
    Author

Kelly Umphenour 6 years ago from St. Louis, MO

That's what I wondered:). Ha! Funny you say that - I spoke to my step dad today and I explained to him that each time this happens, I notice her cheeks get bright red and he shouted out, "she's getting dehydrated!" oh he's an anesthesiologist. I've had every kind of test you can imagine - MRI' extensive hearing tests, eeg's, blood work - no one seems to have a good answer. I asked if we could test her sugar but I guess it would have to be the moment it is occurring?

Mad Dog almost went to the hospital herself today! They finally got a day to play outside and she fell on the concrete and cracked her chin open! I put a butterfly on it - so we've been watching kid movies today:). Little Monsters is on now but I've seen it:)

  • Austinstar profile image

Austinstar 6 years ago from Somewhere in the universe

Oh please, I wouldn't even give 10 cc's of blood just for cracking a chin open. Apparently you see "Little Monsters" every day! How old is Mad Dog? Give her a cookie for me.

You can buy glucometers really cheaply these days and test Sydney's sugar as she is having an 'attack'. It's the only way to do it. At her age, I would get her started on yoga which fixes a whole lot of physical problems. Too late for me, I'm too old to do the downward dog. Hell, I AM the downward dog!

  • RealHousewife profile image

Kelly Umphenour 6 years ago from St. Louis, MO

Mad Dog is all of 9! I do see little monsters and I mean every day. All the kids hang out here, I don't think any of the others moms will let them In:) lol!

Glucometer! Thats it! Yeah, I'm going to. There's a wlagreens on every corner. Thanks! I should do yoga! I'll have to get a video for them - that would be really good for them! You are a genius!

Oh the dogs barked twice today! I got a package - it is cafe press but not the big picture:). I love it! The girls want one of your shirts, it just wouldn't be right for them to wear Stan's around! Lol!

Real, before you spend money on one, check and see what strips your insurance covers...then request a free monitor through your insurance company. Abbot gives a free Freestyle Lite starter kit. :) AccuChek is covered by Blue Cross generally, and they give you a number to call to request a free starter kit as well. Save the money if you can!

  • RealHousewife profile image

Kelly Umphenour 6 years ago from St. Louis, MO

Thanks MO! Ill five it a try - yea I have the kind of insurance that doesn't pay for anything. Private policies are not so great. An MRI is $2500, I just paid for one. Hearing testing and eeg's, allergy tests, gosh! I appreciate that.

Austinstar - it is Vaso Vagal then? I had someone correct me regarding that so of course I thought I was wrong! Smokey And The Bandit! Yeah! I was jealous of Sally Fields!

  • Austinstar profile image

Austinstar 6 years ago from Somewhere in the universe

I was just telling Mo to get a blood type then google "Eat Right For Your Type" and "Group O food list" or A, B, AB

Seriously, My blood work has done a 180 since I started this diet, which is why my blood sugar went down! My blood sugar went down to NORMAL! which I am not used to. That's why I nearly blacked out.

Ok, I need to do my next hub on this! Here I go....

  • profile image

    Motown2Chitown 6 years ago

Egads, Real! In that case, Google Abbott Laboratories and see about getting a Freestyle Lite starter kit from them. The strips are what are really expensive, but if you're not testing too often, it can be affordable. :)

Thanks to both of you! I have Aetna - Dave calls it shitna:). Lol!

I am checking that out now Austinstar! That sounds interesting and I have not heard of that. Sydney is a little over weight so we do watch the high caloric/fatty foods to avoid them. I'm really serious about that.

Austinstar - I had an idea for a hub for you! You'd just be the perfect person to explain this one! Why do Indians lack the enzyme that breaks down alcohol? Of course I'm weird so it may not be interesting to every one:)

  • Austinstar profile image

Austinstar 6 years ago from Somewhere in the universe

Us Injuns do not do well with 'hic' booze. It's genetic. We haven't evolved enough or mixed with those that have.

  • RealHousewife profile image
    Author

Kelly Umphenour 6 years ago from St. Louis, MO

Those genetic codes! I heard that that is why the Indians lost all their land - they didn't have an honest bar tender:)

Now alcohol is not good for your sugar levels! You already know that too!

I can't wait to see the hub. I'm researching some stuff right now. We have moved onto G Force now. Thank gosh for lap tops:)
