Number recognition worksheets & activities

Numbers 1 to 5

Number recognition worksheets can be a fun and interesting way to help preschool and kindergarten kids learn their numbers. Learning the letters of the alphabet and the numbers are among the early exercises that small children need to do. Number recognition worksheets that are well laid out, attractive and interesting for kids would help them sustain interest in the activity for a longer time.

Read on below to see several different types of number recognition worksheets with pictures of actual worksheets as well as animated videos of the worksheets being performed.

Before using preschool number recognition worksheets..

1. Preschool children need to get used to the 'sound' of the numbers, i.e to recognize the spoken 'one', 'two' etc. Singing aloud to them number rhymes such as 'one, two, buckle my shoe', 'one, two, three, four five.." etc would get them used to recognizing the 'sound' of each number. You can slowly recite the numbers 1 to 5 at first and so on.

2. Try to relate numbers to everyday things, like you can show them one banana, two biscuits etc. Initially start with just one and two, later on, you can progress one by one.

3. Then you can help them relate the number to the symbol, i.e the written 1,2,3s.

Number tracing worksheets

Preschool number tracing worksheets are typically of the type where kids have to color inside number outlines or trace over the number. These will help them recognize numbers and also take preliminary steps in trying to begin forming the numbers.

Initially you can start with outlines to color in. Again initially the number outlines can be pretty big in size, because children may not have the required dexterity to manipulate a crayon precisely and color inside a shape. The coloring may be quite clumsy to start with, this is expected. Slowly with practice, they will be able to color better within the shape. Then you can introduce worksheets with numbers smaller in size. Don't force the pace.

Number recognition worksheets

Number recognition worksheets are to help children identify and recognize a given number. For example a simple number recognition worksheet can be to show a picture with 6 flowers - 3 of them with the number 1 and three with the number 2 and ask the child to identify and color the flowers that have the number 2. Of course if the child is able to correctly recognize the number 2, she can complete this activity successfully. See such a number recognition worksheet below.

You can also see the video below which shows the worksheet being performed (by Chalky the 'magic' chalk).

Number recognition worksheets - color by number worksheets

Another type of number recognition worksheet is to show a picture with different parts bearing different numbers. The activity here is to color only a certain number. If done correctly it it will bring out a certain object. For example in the picture below, the number recognition activity is to color all the 3s red. If done correctly it will reveal a red apple.

Number recognition worksheets - connect the dots worksheets

In this type of number recognition worksheet the number recognition activity is to connect dots (bearing a given number that is to be recognized). If the dots are connected properly the right picture will be revealed. (In a variation of this if the activity is to learn to recognize all numbers from say 1 to 10 in order, then the dots to be connected will be so numbered.)

In the number recognition worksheet below, the activity is to recognize and connect all the dots with the number 7. If done correctly a cartoon picture of Pixy Pig is revealed. The child can then enjoy coloring this picture.

Number recognition - number maze worksheets

In this type of number recognition worksheets, a type of number maze is given. The activity can be to join all the instances of the number to be recognized and thereby help someone or something reach the destination. For example in the worksheet below the activity is to join all the 6s to help Booby Rat reach the cheese. (In a variation of this we can have the activity to join all numbers in order).

To see the worksheet performed do view the video below.

In a somewhat similar worksheet, instead of giving it as a number maze worksheet, the activity can be to recognize and (say) color all instances of the number (sought to be recognized) in order to help someone or something reach a destination.

For example the number recognition activity below is to help Leo Lion reach his den by (recognizing and) coloring all the signposts bearing the number 14 brown.

The video shows the worksheet being done.

Number recognition worksheets - recognizing multiple numbers

These type of number recognition worksheets are a kind of 'review' in that they assess if the doer is able to recognize multiple numbers by doing some activity (often coloring) based on the number. Color by number worksheets with pictures with different parts with numbers to be colored as instructed would accomplish this objective.

For example in the worksheet below the number recognition activity is as follows: Each part of the picture is given a certain number. The instruction (expected to be orally given to the child) would be to color (say) 1 brown, 2 green, 3 orange, 4 blue and 5 black. Of course the child has to hear the number, recognize it and color accordingly.

The animated video below shows the worksheet being performed.
