The Typical Filipino Family

Updated on March 5, 2013

A family is the basic unit of our society and can be likened to a human body consisting of different parts. Each part however has its own function and purpose and should work in sync in order to accomplish a common goal.

In a typical family in the Philippines, the father is acknowledged head of the family. Also the so-called breadwinner, he is loved and respected. He is also caring, hardworking, persevering, and persisting. Since raising kids and making both ends meet can be difficult for some families, many mothers will work to help his husband cope up with their expenses. The father commands full authority in the family.

The mother on the hand is considered be the light of the house (“ilaw ng tahanan”). She is responsible in all housekeeping activities, taking care of the children, planning of meals, and budgeting the income of the family. Mothers also shower her family with attention, and affection. The mother is usually protective and defensive of her children. She can also be strict and will do her best to teach his children the value of discipline by example. She also help the children with their assignments and projects.

The role of the child may depend on whether he is the eldest, middle, the youngest or the only child. The eldest takes charge in helping mothers take care of his siblings. The middle child may assume the role of the eldest child. The youngest is often the most loved although he is also expected to have his own share in doing some household chores. The youngest always gets the special treatment from his parents.

The typical Filipino family value education so much. Letting the siblings in the family finish college is so important that the parents will do their best to earn decent enough income to help sustain their studies.

The typical Filipino family commonly observes respects for authority, admiration and compliance toward their parents and older siblings.

The typical Filipino family also loves bonding and they will find ways to make the most of their quality time by telling stories, watching TV, playing computer games and among others.

Parents and older members of the family usually serve as role models of desirable traits to the child. The child emulates and identifies himself with people she loves and admires the most. In general, the younger ones learn many things and acquire necessary skills by copying what the adults do.

That’s it folks… thanks for the read!

As a half-Filipino, this was an enjoyable read. Family is central to Filipinos, I love it. I love my family.

Excellent hub. I find it very interesting. Is this photo one of your family? I come from a large family with 7 children. We are, of course, all grown now with our own families. I was #2 in line. I will visit again.

Great picture of the Filipino family. I especially like the idea of the wife being the light of the home. Thanks for sharing.

This was very enlightening. This is the way families should be and use to be. It is a shame that the economy has taken the toll on so many families. I hope one day all families of all nationalities will return to some of the traditional ways...at least the important ones.
