Valentine Gifts For Kids
Valentines Crafts & Cards
Make It Fun!
I often think of the old days when I think of Valentines Day. When I was younger I always enjoyed writing Valentines cards for my friends and coming up with fun gifts that did not cost much. One of my favorite things to do when I was a kid was to cut pictures out of old magazines and create my own cards and decorate shoes boxes to fill with lots of goodies.
I often looked forward to the baked treats at my grandmothers church. All of the best cooks there always brought the best Valentine cupcakes, homemade Valentine candies (some with hearts on them) and delicious cakes decorated with pink, red and white frosting.
Now that I'm a mother I really plan some fun things with my children for this special holiday that celebrates "Love." Since Valentine ads hit all of the magazines early, there are plenty of pictures to cut out to make a collage or decorate a box. Another thing we do is decorate a cardboard box and make a mailbox for the family to drop Valentine cards in. This is easy to make. You can use pink, red and white construction paper to cover the shoe box and then cut a slit in the top for mail. The only other thing you need is clear tape or glue. We also cover the box with heart stickers or cut hearts out of red construction paper.
This year my kids wanted to give their friends a little toy, so I always order a batch of goodies from Oriental Trading Company who have orders with a lot in them for little money. I usually just have the kids pick a treat to put with their Valentine cards for friends, but now that the school recommends other choices to avoid a "chaotic sugar meltdown" at school, I will order on-line.
I thought I would share a few things that I do to indulge my children on this special day. My little girl always wants to get into the spirit and wear something that has a heart on it. I usually go to Target since they usually have a t-shirt there to fit the theme.
There are many inexpensive options when it comes to a t-shirt that reminds us of Valentines Day. It could be just a white t-shirt with the words "I Love You" on it. There are many craft kits for writing on fabric for children and adults. You can also take an old t-shirt that you may already have and decorate it with puffy glitter paint. A lot of stores like Target sell holiday themed t-shirts for close to $5.00 if you do not want to bother. You can also check on-line stores too.
Heart Shaped Fun For Everyone!
My kids favorite things to bake are heart shaped cookies and cupcakes to decorate. I usually load up with pink, red and white frosting, shiny cupcake holders, heart shaped candies and whatever else I can place on top of all the baked goodies. My little one also loves to decorate with stars too.
The most important thing is that we all do this together and enjoy it. There are plenty of recipes that you can use without learning anything new. The fun comes with the decorating, even if you use cake mix from the market. I was thinking of trying to make candy with the kids this year like chocolate hearts. I also make sure that I always decorate the table with red plastic or ceramic plates and festive napkins with hearts on them.
The most important thing is to have fun and not necessarily buy lots of stuff.....be creative with things you already have......
