My Father's Shoulders

Updated on July 26, 2011

This poem is a tribute to my daughter's birth father, her loving foster father and her forever father. It takes strong men to raise strong daughters.

There was a first.

A beginning.

He gave me,

my heart

beating fast.

He lifted me,

past his shoulders

to the stars,

and breathed a wish into me.

Goodbye.

There was a place to start.

Wrapping me in a blanket of love,

resting my head on his warm shoulder,

we waited

for you.

For forever.

You came.

The first,

the middle,

the only.

Forever.

You held my hand,

and raised me up

to sit upon your strong shoulders.

To see across the seas,

the bright stars that had been wished upon,

the silent mountains where I waited.

The lights twinkling through

the panes of glass.

The laughter.

The love.

Around the table,

waiting.

Waiting for me,

carried in

on the shoulders

of my fathers.
