Why do we need to know our biological parents? Are your roots that important?

I'm adopted since I was 9 months old. Born in Bogotá, Colombia. My parents are Dutch. I'm almost 38 and never travelled to my native country. Problems with my identity, I've never had. Curious I've always been. Some people can't imagine that I never looked for my roots. Does it really make a difference? Is it that important?
