It was the Christmas of 1960 and I was a 16 year old junior in high school. I remember dressing up as Santa and delivering presents in a big sack to my three younger sisters and brother. Two of my sisters and my brother still believed in Santa. The espressions on their face when they saw me as Santa was priceless.
When I was a child about 7 or 8 years old, we drove to the airport one Easter Sunday to drop a family member who was immigrating to Canada. The departure area was very crowded and for some reasons I slipped into the crowd and lost my family. I got scared and didn't realized that my entire family was much scared that they couldn't find me. I ended up in the hands of the authorities with an egg basket in my hands until my family came to pick me up in the security office. While, my mom and dad rushed to get me, I was reluctant to leave because the security officer told me to stay put and we will later on go "egg hunting" while they were announcing on the PA about a lost girl. Classic holiday memory, don't you think? Lol!
My best childhood holiday memory involved Christmas time. Every year my family would drive around and look at Christmas lights. I remember going to church on Christmas Eve, going to my paternal Grandmother's house to open presents, having dinner, and then admiring the lights.
I vividly remember this time and want to carry on the memory and tradition with my own family now.
It was during the summer, I was around 7 or 8 years old and my godfather came by with a bunch of cousins and aunts and uncles and asked my mother if he could take me to the beach for that day and she said yes. Spent all day long at the beach, had a sort of picnic there, even (I guess they hadn't heard about UV rays back then). It was great! By the end of he day, obviously, had a terrible sunburn all over my body, but it was worth it...
My best holiday memory as a child was when I was 12 and it was the last really big Christmas my family had together when my Grandmother was still alive and my brother was still engaged and hadn't married Lidia yet. I remember we all had a wonderful time, Both my grandparents were there and enjoying themselves, a couple of my Aunts and Uncles were there, both my brother and sister were there and low and behold, my distanced father was there as well. My mother made her famous Christmas cookies for the last time, my Grandmother made her tamales for the last time and it was a very warm and cheerful holiday. We all had cookies, hot chocolate and sweet bread while sharing stories of the good old days and having some laughs. I will never forget it.
