You need to visit the Recorder of Deeds at the County Courthouse. If by chance when you purchased your home, you received the papers which told the line of owners to your property, you will have to start with your own purchase and follow it backwards. The grantor is the seller, and the grantee is the buyer. Some places have all of these records computerized or else this can really take some time.
The list of owners back to the first to build your home is the skeleton of your home's history. To flesh out your story, the next thing is to visit your local historical society or archives with list in hand and learn the histories of those families. Of course the most important is the original builder, but there may be some surprises along the way!
If your home is on the National Register, that information is already given in the nomination of the property and is also available online.
