What were you afraid of as a child, besides the usual monsters under the bed and dark rooms?
Childhood fears: Was there anything unusual--not just the dark and monsters under the bed--but any strange fears that kept you up at night or caused you to change your behavior because you were afraid? Why do you think you were afraid of these unusual things? Please share.
Big black dogs. I have no idea why but I was terrified of them. Sometimes my nightmares would be big black dogs foaming at the mouth, showing their teeth, and chasing me. Over the years, the dogs have turned into gun men.
That sounds terrifying, indeed! I wonder if you'd seen them in a movie or cartoon when you were very young. Sometimes, we can only wonder.
I have a terrible fear for JAWS and JURASSIC PARk. Ever since i saw those movies when i was young, i kept having nightmares even until now.
Big mouths with rows of gleaming teeth. Those movies definitely make an impression on young minds, don't they? I was too old for these movies to affect me, but I can't imagine having been a child when they came out.
I used to always have a this dream that made me want to train in martial arts and study every day for hours. In the dream, my family was sleeping, it was dark outside. I had this looming feeling that something was about to happen. Something really bad. I would wander around the house trying to figure out what it was. Out if nowhere, someone would be trying to break into the house, only no one else but me could see what was going on. I would try to stop this man, but no matter how I tried, no matter what I did, he was always stronger and smarter than me. When I would try to tell my family something was wrong they wouldn't believe me. Ultimately, he would kill everyone in my family and I was totally powerless to stop him. When he was finished maliciously killing my family, he would leave me alive and alone to morn the death of my family and contemplating my insignificance. I still have this dream occasionally.
That is an intense nightmare. Manipulation and powerlessness--the core of many a nightmare.
I was so afraid of getting lost. Or simply not knowing how to get somewhere. I don't know why, even if I was in the car with my parents and they took a wrong turn and they said it out loud I'd immediately lose it, I would try to figure out what way to take (I had no idea). I was also afraid of getting lost on my bed which sounds totally silly but as a child while I was sleeping I would wake up in the dark and not move in inch afraid of falling off the bed. I used to call my mom and make her turn on the light so I can figure out where I was and move into a more secure position. I was also afraid of losing my mom, which I believe every child had this fear. But other than that I don't recall anymore fears. Interesting question btw.
Interesting answer! Lost on the bed. Hmm. But it makes perfect sense when I think back to what it felt like to be a child.
I was particularly afraid of two things; Someone peeking in the windows. I have no idea why is was so profound. And the second is losing my mom. I was scared every time she went to the store or shopping that she'd get into an accident and wouldn't come home. Turns out I did lose her at age 15 to cancer.
I think the second fear was based in the fact I lost my dad when I was 8 so it was natural to worry about losing her and being left alone.
I was afraid of being left behind.
I was scared to death of being kept after school.
And really afraid when our class got punished.
I went to Catholic school.

Besides being driven by biology, what else drives people to have children in the 21st century? It hasn't really been a long time in the history of humankind that we had a CHOICE of having children or not. Consistently RELIABLE birth control has been on the scene for only about 70 years. So it would...
