What do you do when there is a topic that you cannot agree on with a loved one?

There is one issue on which a very close family member and I have a great difference of opinion. It is like the elephant in the room as it keeps coming up, circling around, and wanting to present its ugly head. It just will NOT go away...What to do???? I am one of those who usually has an answer for things like this but not so with this one....

You are not meant to agree in everything with your loved ones. You just have to try to see things from their perspective and respect their opinion, the same way you expect them to do with yours.

It sounds like you both know each others differing opinions, so the only thing to do is to accept it and move on. There's no point going over it again and again or trying to argue to convince them you are right.

im sure if you think about it you disagree on more than 1 thing. maybe this is a big one you have strong feelings about. in that case, i would continue the conversations as long as they stay respectful. if not, disingage the conversation simply by letting them know you'll take the points they have made into consideration, and do some thinking about it and encourage them to do the same with yours.

If it causes problems in the relationship you may need to talk to the person and say - hey we will never agree so let's agree to disagree and not discuss this when we are together.

All the comments I have read here are good answers. If nothing else works, I recommend letting your family member have the last word and hold your peace. --Blessings!

The main thing is to let the other person know who still love him or her no matter what, and just agree to disagree.  I have many in my family with whom we do not see eye to eye, and I have come to realize we are each individuals and cannot force what we believe or our opinion on a certain issue on another.  Although, we know in our hearts, it may be something that is not good for our loved ones in the long run, and that is what really bother us, for we may have been there, or just been around a lot longer in this life, and know a bit more.  Again, the bottom line is to still love them and let them know it is okay to still have open communication if they so desire.  As relates to my children, they know they can talk to me about any subject, and I am glad about that, well ... as far as I know : )

    Hugs and blessings, Faith Reaper

I make sure the debate does no  get out of hand and that we end up still being friends. I avoid being harsh and  stop the conversation when I know things are getting heated. I always make the debate clear and get to the point of it and end with a good note.

Is it really that big of a deal. If you disagree, just walk away from it. Just let it go, and not let it bother you. Its perfectly normal to have different opinions. You just keep your opinions at that. Don't let it turn into a fight, and so on. If its something huge and life pressing, then cause for action may be needed. If not, just agree to disagree and move on.

my spouse and my dad have lots of topics that i couldn't agree. I cannot voice out my opinion because they will claim that I answer them back. So, i usually, nod my head with agreement even though i disagree and everything will be fine. This is chinese culture. I believe western doesn't have this problems
