Independence is mastered in small steps. Engaging children with conversation and spending time with our children reap the best results.
My daughter started putting on he own bandages at 2 or 3 years old. Now she puts them on friends.
My daughter started choosing what to wear each day from around the same age. I usually go with what she wears. If there is an expectation for more formal dress, I usually let her know what is expected and what she can choose from, and she chooses. Giving them lots of choices is very empowering for children. When they enjoy this type of power, when we can give it to them, they are likely to take on more responsibilities. My daughter cooks now, and often brings out the garbage and recycling. She puts away her bike in the shed. When she needs adult help, she asks, but she is pretty good at doing lots of things herself (age 10).
