Why do many subjects and things rotate around peer pressure?
People should be able to help each other emotionally and physically. Why does society decide the there are certain places in life that you're supposed to buy certain items and have certain amounts of money, or be a certain way?
Mostly likely if everyone is doing it, it means you probably shouldn't do it. Peer pressure is tempting at times, especially if your teen, I remember those teen years.
(or what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul? Mark 8:36)
We are taught how to conform to the wishes of society by our parents, siblings, and others close to us even before our ability distinguish what we would later describe as 'right, or 'wrong' before we even turn seven years of age. What we're taught become our subconscious beliefs. So conforming is quickly discovered by us as the way to stay safe; to be approved of; to be 'one of the tribe.' Something very important and going right back to prehistoric times. To be the 'odd one out,' could mean one is 'cast out' into the wilderness.
Of course, when we start to grow up we have no idea that some 95% of our 'selection of action' is dictated by these deep-down and unconscious beliefs.
But as adults, and with this knowledge in consciousness, we can take steps to be "The Captain of our own ship, the master of our fate." It does, of course, take effort.
Humans are basically animals. We have a primitive part, and an intelligent part. Emotions are part of the primitive part. Pack mentality is also primitive, and it overrides the intelligence in most of us. People don't want to be picked on by others, so they conform to what they think is the majority. Sure, there are exceptions, but the general rule is hide in the pack for safety.
Passive aggressive people are moving about in the pack but they are taking advantage of the pack fragileness.
We are a social species, so social approval matters to us. After all, if you live but you're ostracized by the tribe so you have no mates or descendants, your genes die out.

I am currently working at a multi global company as an MA but somehow it boggles my mind that this company has no code of ethics, manual of operations, etc. Now, I have a boss that is obviously going way beyond all his efforts to steal or embezzle money from the company. In spite the reports if the...

Why do we blame peer pressure as the cause of bad choices we make?I find that we take the easy road and blame the situation, or the people around us for making bad decisions. We do not want to take responsibility for our actions - good, bad or indifferent.

I could have been a smoker, and I almost was. The person who pressured me into trying it once was a relative. Nice, huh?
