I'm not sure if it's universal but in the 'middle' South where I live (upper middle Tennessee) the rule for porches has always been (at least for us traditional folks) to face the porch dead South. Two reasons. First, by facing South, the sun rising in the East and setting in the West, the porch receives a longer period of shade throughout the day and second, most of the breeze here flows in from the West in an eastern or southeastern direction.
My father-in-law (age 92) says to include the fact that most storms drop on us from dead north and by facing the porch south, a body can still set out on the porch and enjoy the show. (His words).
