Baby Got a Gripe? Get Gripe Water!

Updated on November 3, 2013

Gripe water is a great, all-natural way to help alleviate baby's tummy troubles. It's frustrating being a parent sometimes, because your little ones can't tell you what's wrong, don't you think? I can usually tell if my baby is having gas pains because of the way he pulls in his legs or arches his back. When this happens (and especially at night), just a little bit of gripe water helps to calm his tummy down. It helps him to settle quickly with less spit-up, too. This is important to me, because I always get nervous when he spits-up while laying down.

What I do is this: after he feeds, I burp him. Usually, I can get a better burp if I do it while he's sitting up than if he's over my shoulder. However, I will try it both ways to get that ever-elusive burp.

If he's burped but still acting uncomfortable, that's when I'll use some of this gripe water. I take the syringe and place it gently into the inside of one of his cheeks and gently release. He's always unsure of the taste (after all, he only drinks milk!) but he's never had a problem swallowing it.

Usually--and almost immediately--the fidgeting lessens or stops and a bit of a calm comes over him. I keep him upright for a few minutes longer to help aid digestion and then go on with our day (or night!). I feel much more confident laying him down in the middle of the night knowing that he likely will not spit-up after using this product. I think the calming effect helps him to sleep better, too!

Helpful Tip: It's recommended that you replace your bottle of gripe water 4-6 weeks after it's been opened. I'd highly recommend buying two bottles (there is a two-pack available after you click-through the product) so that you are never without. There's nothing worse than realizing you have nothing to help you in the middle of the night!

Sometimes my baby gets painful, LOUD hiccups (likely from swallowing too much air when feeding). A little bit of gripe water, given slowly, helps to take these hiccups away almost instantly. This is very handy in the middle of the night, since the hiccups seem to occur after laying him down.

My son Jeremy had horrible stomach problems and we would use Gripe Water, it works good for the most part. Poor baby, I don't want him to have a belly ache, he is too precious to have pain.
