Best Pet Dog Bike Trailer, Stroller, Carrier 2014

Updated on October 9, 2014

Bike riding is not only good exercise; its fun and environmentally friendly. Finding the right bike trailer, so you can bring your four legged friends along with you on your bike ride, can be a challenge however.

Here are some things I found to help me narrow down which bike trailer was right for my needs.

Style/Size Do you need to be able to carry more than one dog? What size are your dogs? Will you only be on paved roads, or do you need something that can handle slightly rougher paths? Some pet bike trailers are convertible from a bike trailer into a stroller. Some need tools to convert, and others can be converted on the go.

If you do want a convertible style trailer, think about where you would be using it as a stroller, and pay attention to size. If you want to be able to push the stroller into stores with you, remember that some doorways are only 29 wide, so anything wider than that wont fit.

Storage - Do you want to be able to fold up your trailer and fit it in the trunk of a car? Some fold up quite compactly, and others do not. Also, some have quick-release wheels, making removing the wheels for storage or folding quick and painless, where others will need tools, so pay attention to that if you will be folding and transporting the trailer often.

If you will be lifting and loading the trailer often, the weight of the trailer can make a big difference, and they vary widely, so that is another thing to consider.

Comfort and ease of use There are several other features to consider that can make a difference in how enjoyable to use the trailer is for you. Make sure the hitch on the trailer you are looking at works with your particular style of bicycle, and if you will be towing the trailer with more than one bike, think about how easy (or difficult) it is to move the hitch from one bike to another. Some have removable bottoms to make cleaning easier, and some offer larger storage pockets for extra gear.

Best Dog, Pet Bike Trailer / Stroller

Aosom II 3 in 1 Double Pet Bike Trailer/Stroller

The Aosom II 3 in 1 Double PET TRAILER Bike Trailer/Stroller is a model that includes a conversion kit so it can be used as both a stroller and a bike trailer. This feature means that you don't have to carry any tools with you for conversion on the go.

The Aosom II 3 in 1 is designed to be large enough to be comfortable for 2 dogs, but be aware the weight limit is 88 pounds, so I wouldn't plan on using it for 2 large dogs. It also has a hook inside you can attach leashes too, and a storage area in the back for any extra items you want to take with you on your bike ride. This trailer can fold to make it easier to store and transport.

To make for a more comfortable ride, this trailer has rear wheel suspension to absorb shock when riding over bumpy terrain. It also has a 3-in-1 weather canopy to protect your dogs in case of bad weather. The hitch on this trailer attaches onto the rear wheel of your bicycle, and it is compatible with bikes with quick release wheels.

When using it as a stroller, the Aosom II 3 in 1 has an adjustable handle bar, which is especially nice if you are tall so that you aren't hunched over while pushing the stroller. The front wheel can also be locked for use for jogging, or can swivel 360 degrees to help with maneuverability when using around town. It also has a hand lock brake on the rear wheel for keeping the jogging stroller in place while you are stopped.

The Aosom II 3 in 1 is not the lightest or the most compact bike trailer out there, but if you want a trailer that you can use as a stroller as well, the easy no-tool conversion on it makes it a great stroller/trailer combo.

5 stars for Instep Sync Bicycle Trainer

New Dog Bike Carrier / Trailer

Aosom Elite Bike Carrier/Trailer

If you don't need the stroller conversion option, Aosom also makes the Aosom Elite Bike Carrier/Trailer. It is also big enough for 2 dogs, but the weight limit is a little lower than the 2 in 1 at 66 pounds. Out of the box, the whole trailer sets up in less than 15 minutes, and attaching it to your bike is also very quick. Like the Aosom 2 in 1, it attaches to the rear wheel of your bicycle. One thing I like about this type of connection is it doesn't scratch the paint on your bicycle frame.

There is an attached 32" high safety flag to increase visibility of the bike trailer, and a leash hook inside for attaching your pets leash to. The main fabric of the trailer is a water-resistant polymer, with a mesh front door and mesh windows on the side and back. There is also a removable plastic cover for when it is wet outside.

The frame is all steel, so this trailer is sturdy, but at 33 pounds is fairly heavy for its size. It does fold for storage or putting in the trunk of your car, and the folding just involves pulling a pin and collapsing it.

Booyah Medium Dog Pet Bike Trailer and Stroller

Another stroller/trailer combo is the Booyah Medium Dog Pet Bike Trailer Pet Trailer and Stroller. One of my favorite features of this pet trailer was how quickly and compactly it folds, making it very easy to transport. This trailer also features both a front and back door, as well as a storage pouches on each side of the trailer. There is also a leash attached to the frame of the stroller for securing the dog inside.

The set-up of the Booyah trailer is a little more involved than some of the others, but once assembled, it feels very sturdy and rides smoothly. This trailer also hitches onto the rear wheel of the bicycle, and once you have installed the hitch on your bike, hooking and unhooking the trailer is quick and painless.

This trailer also features a 3 layer sunroof. You can either leave it completely open, so your pup can enjoy sticking his head out and feeling the breeze or you can zip close the mesh layer, or close it completely with the waterproof layer to protect from rain.

Best Bike Trailer for Dogs and Pets

DoggyRide Mini Dog Bike Trailer

If you are looking for a lighter weight pet bike trailer, the DoggyRide Mini Dog Bike Trailer might be the right one for you. At only 17 pounds, the DoggyRide was the lightest of the dog bike trailers I looked at.

One feature I really liked about this trailer was if you are driving and then biking, you can easily remove the wheels on this trailer, and use it as a dog crate in the back of your SUV while you drive to your destination. Another nice feature is that this trailer is delivered mostly assembled, so setup is very quick.

This trailer is on the smaller size, and has a weight capacity of 55 pounds, and is recommended for use with dogs with a shoulder height of less than 15 inches.

There is an optional removable pad, which makes the trailer more comfortable. It also includes a safety flag and rear reflectors for increased safety and visibility on the road.

The DoggyRide does not include a stroller kit, but there is a stroller kit available for purchase separately if you would like that option.

Best Dog and Pet Bicycle Trailer

Solvit HoundAbout Pet Bicycle Trailer

Lastly, I looked at the Solvit HoundAbout Pet Bicycle Trailer. This trailer has both a Medium and Large option, so if you have larger dogs, the large had the highest weight limit of all the trailers I looked at.

The medium has a weight limit of 50 pounds, while the large has a weight limit of 110 pounds. This trailer includes a removable pad over the waterproof floorboard, which makes cleaning easier, and I like the padding for the dogs comfort.

This trailer has both front and rear doors, each with 2 layers, a mesh layer, and a vinyl windscreen layer. There is a D ring and tether attached to the inside of the trailer for securing your dog. Because the frame is all steel, it is on the heavy side, so you may want to take note of that.

This was the only trailer I looked at that did not include a flag for increased visibility, but it does have reflectors on the back. This is another trailer that has an optional stroller conversion kit available for purchase separately if you decide you need that down the road.
