Biking With Young Children

Updated on August 17, 2016

Bicycles: They are a child's first vehicle!

A child's bicycle will be their first true mode of transportation... or shall we say 'their first vehicle' that they will drive in their life. A child may not realize it, but this is a huge milestone in their development. It will very likely be the biggest responsibility that take on thus far in their existence in this life.

When a child is first learning to ride a bike, they are the bravest people on the face of the earth. They are young. They want to please and succeed... And they know that there is a very good chance that they will crash...

The look of uncertainty as they are guided on a wobbly bike, with mom and dad taking turns, running beside them, holding onto the seat, helping stabilize them...

Then maybe there were a few test runs with a devoted adult running beside them, letting go for a few peddles, just to catch them, preventing a fall -- being the hero.

Then, all of a sudden... There is that one time that you let go, they keep peddling, you keep pace with them... but you really didn't need to... they keep going, going and now they have just rode their way into a new a new stage in life: Freedom is now theirs.

When a child learns to ride their bike they world is theirs

When a child learns to ride their bicycle it will be a day that they will remember for the rest of their lives! It is the day that they gain a small step of independence during their long path into adulthood. It is a memory that that they will carry with them for all eternity ~ Let's make it a positive experience that they can grow with! A lesson that they will pull out of their back pocket during their future times of need, they can accomplish anything that they put their mind into!

Their first set of wheels, wheels that build confidence

A child's first mode of transportation is a big responsibility for both the giver of the gift and the recipient. Be it a tricycle, a scooter, a bike with training wheels or a specialty early starter bike. The child will grow, learn and develop through the experience. Really, a bike is more than just metal and rubber. It is a tool that will help your child develop.

They will learn safe handling... gain independence and a sense of freedom.

5 Must Brings ~ For early stage riders - During the early stages of bike riding

When a child is still building their confidence riding their bikes, carrying some key essential supplies will help them succeed, even when they fall!

  1. Band-aids -- need I say more?? Let the child know that you will keep band-aids in you pocket and close at hand, 'just in case'... Also give them a band-aid or two for their own pocket... In case you take a tumble (they will feel more confident knowing that it might not just be them)...
  2. Water bottles -- being hydrated is important, anytime, anywhere...
  3. A camera -- to capture the moment that they will remember for a lifetime...
  4. A change of clothes... Just in case they blow a pair or two of knees
  5. Knee and elbow pads. They may be a small thing, but they will help to prevent the common injuries that children can sustain during the early fazes of learning... Scraped knees are no fun! A set of pads will save time, stress and pain and give them a little boost of confidence.

The first take off... - Will be harder for mom or dad...

And a memory to last a lifetime for the young one in your life...

When they graduate from their beginner bike...

When it is time to upgrade their beginner bicycle to a more suited match to their developing skills seeking out the right fit to enhance your child's confidence and build onto the skills that they have generated is very important. There are quite a few options out there, like a bike that is their size with training wheels. Once they get comfortable with their new bike, they way it handles, how to maneuver turns and figure out the braking system you can remove the training wheels and for most children, under the right guidance, biking freestyle will come with ease...

Girls just wanna have some fun too!

Some accessories are for safety, others are quite simply just fun! Helmets, water bottles, flags and baskets... Doll baskets, head lights and even horns make something that is already great, a bit better!

There are a ton of great, girly accessories out there... Let her have the ride with all the bells and whistles!!

Today is a moment in time in which your child is learning and developing. What we expose our children to today will form who they become tomorrow... A young boy or girl that has the opportunity to explore biking as a hobby is more likely to carry on with the sport as an adult and be physically healthier for it...

The new style pedal-less bikes are brilliant for toddlers. I was at a cyclocross event recently, with grown men taking it seriously in lycra, teens racing for prizes and little kids whizzing round in sensible shoes and good warm coats. Everyone was racing and having fun.

I love the picture of dad and new bike rider. That is so just like it is on that first ride. Thank you for the memories. I think everyone has a little experience in this life adventure.
