Everybody takes photos at their kid's birthday parties, right? But, do you have a special family photo tradition?

Taking an "official" photo each year in the same way, or at the same place, will become a special celebration of life.

It's a quick and simple way to document your kid's childhood - and when your child is grown, these 18 or 21 pictures will tell quite a story!

Birthday themes come and go, but it's the traditions that create comfort and consistency in our lives.

Photo Tips

What makes this photo special is you. As long as you designate it as the "official" birthday photo - it's the "official" birthday photo!

While your child goes through many changes, trying to keep some things consistent will lend continuity to your series.

For example, shoot all horizontal or vertical photos. And try to capture the photo in the same place - always at the kitchen table, in the living room, in the backyard.

It's OK to start these traditions at any age and continue them only as long as they feel right for your family. Even if it's only something you do for a few years, don't worry, some traditions change over time.

Don't stress about it too much, there is always so much going on at birthdays, you might forget, or just not get the shot you want. you can always re-stage it later if you want.
