10 Ways to Boost Your Confidence as a Parent

Updated on March 1, 2018

All parents want to feel good and confident of themselves. Most of the time, parents, especially single ones, get overwhelmed and almost don’t have time to take care of themselves. Thus, they always feel beat and worn out.

There are ways to boost your confidence as a parent.

1. Be Confident

The responsibilities of parents, especially single ones, are sometimes more than they can take. For first timers, it’s overwhelming for them when they don’t seem to know what to do and they feel as if they want to give up. But you have to do your best effort to let the world see a strong and confident you. Cheer up, focus on the positives, be confident and show that you know exactly what you are doing as a parent.

2. Don't Stop Learning

Why stop when you can retain or add more to your knowledge? Learning doesn’t have to stop when you finish school. Think which skills or areas you would like to learn more. Music? Arts? Cooking? It’s also helpful if you take a hobby where you can learn and enjoy. Utilize the use of internet and social media, or read a book to enhance your knowledge. If you can, enroll in a short-term course you feel would be beneficial to you.

3. Relax

Being busy all the time makes you agitated and upbeat. Calm yourself by taking deep breaths. As you inhale, think of something good that will relax your mind and body such as "I am confident" or "I can do this". Think of another good thought as you exhale. You may want to take a walk with nature or a good long hot bath. You’d never want stress to catch up with you if you don’t relax.

4. Love Yourself

You may miss the things you were used to have and used to do because you only have yourself to think of then. You are now a parent. It’s a tough job but you have to love yourself for it. Others might criticize you for the mistakes you do as a parent. Don't let that define who you are. Figure out what makes you feel good about you as a parent. Treat yourself as you would treat your children. The more you love yourself, the more you become confident of what you can do as a parent. Your child will also grow to be a loving person because if you love yourself, it means you radiate love as a parent and it reaches out to them..

5. Stay Healthy

You can achieve more as a parent if you are healthy. Do not neglect to take care of your health. Eat healthy and nutritious foods, exercise daily by taking a walk, working out at the gym or doing simple exercises at home. Also, reduce stress, drink lots of water, and avoid smoking. A healthy parent means a healthy child. It also helps boost your confidence if you are fit and healthy.

6. Look Your Best

Don’t forget to sooth away the tension by making yourself look good. Yes, we are busy parents and we do grow old with wrinkles, but it doesn't mean that we don't need to look good anymore. If you need to have your hair done, then go for it. Practice the habit of daily hygiene. You may want to visit a parlor and treat yourself to a facial massage. Smile even if things are not always good. Looking your best even at the worst situation of parenting will boost your confidence and help you take control of the situation.

7. Love Your Responsibilities as a Parent

Loving what you do as a parent will always help you through the ups and downs of parenting. If you don’t enjoy and love your responsibilities, it will reflect on your home and on your children. Loving your responsibilities is a proof that you enjoy everything about being a parent and that you love your children. It helps you deal cheerfully with the difficulties of being a parent and you’ll raise happy children.

8. Make a Wish List

There are many things you’d really like to do as a parent. List all the things you think will make you a happy and confident parent. Sometimes, you might feel you have failed as a parent without actually knowing which part and how. List all the things you wish for, things you could do to improve where you failed. Then make a list also of the achievements you are proud of. This will help you build a better sense of purpose and renewed confidence as a parent.

9. Indulge Yourself

What's stopping you? You deserve it even if it's only for a few hours. Go out and watch a movie with a friend or with your children. Enjoy a good laugh with them to shoo away the stress and pressures of parenting. Have a relaxing massage and while you are at it, you could use a nap. Or you may choose to go shopping for a nice clothes for yourself.

10. Get a Good Night's Sleep

A good night’s sleep is essential to us as food and water are. It rejuvenates our tired mind and body. After a busy and tiring day of juggling work between your job and parenting, a good night's sleep is what you need. Don't deprive yourself of sleep. Always get that required sleep to help you have the energy and confidence you need the next day.

Parenting is fun and difficult at the same time. If you start losing ground because of stress, you also neglect taking care of yourself and you might fail as a parent. Boost your confidence. Enjoy parenting and enjoy your kids!
