The Family That Reads Together...

Updated on May 4, 2014

We Love Books!

My 2 girls wanted to help me create this page so they will each contribute their own section so they can let everyone know what they are currently reading. We love to read and like to recommend books to our friends. We go to the library once a week and check out a huge bag full of books. Its so much fun going through them all. We read together before they go to bed and now that they are 13 & 9 they do a lot of reading on their own. They are so excited to have a place to recommend books that they really enjoyed & so am I. Hope you come back and see what new books we have found!

I also collect Little Golden Books!

Collecting & reading books from my childhood

When I was little my mother always bought me the Little Golden Books, then they were from just $.25 to $.50. She would read to me at night and I still have them all! My favorite one was always "Boy With A Drum" with the fun phrase "Rat-a-Rat Tat and Rum-a-tum Tum." My kids loved that one when they were little too. Little Golden Books always had the best Illustrators like Eloise Wilkens who was my mothers favorite and she made sure she picked out those books to buy. I am still trying to find more of those to add to my collection. Of course now I am paying a lot more than $.25 for them. I have also started picking them up at yard sales and selling them on our eBay Auction site at 2friendstreasures. Any that I already have I will sell to make more money to buy more! If the kids will let me that is. Even as an adult I love to look at the children's books and see the wonderful pictures. As an Artist that has always appealed to me the most.

We just recently moved so I gathered up all the Golden Books from my girls room since they are older now and not really reading them. I want to find a special place to put them. Looking at them again makes me want to buy some more to add to my collection. The illustrations are wonderful. I recently had a friend ask me to draw illustrations for a children's book she is writing about a cat she had. Its been fun. I've always wanted to do that. I want them to be as charming and captivating as the ones I remember as a child. I believe that is what really draws you into the story.

The yard sale season will be starting up soon so I need to get ready to find some more wonderful Little Golden Books for my collection. I will post them here for you to see.

Dawn's Current picks

Mitch Albom

Currently I am reading "The First Phone Call From Heaven" By Mitch Albom. I actually won this book on Goodreads. I really enjoyed his other books. I am half way through and loving it. What a great idea. One day the phone rings and its a family memeber who has recently passed away calling to let you know they are ok and it is wonderful where they are. Then another call comes in to another person in town. Its a story of hope and belief. And what happens when some of the people in town dont believe. If you love Mitch Albom, you will love this book.

What My Book Club is Reading

The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman

I have a wonderful group of girls at my local library that get together for a book club once a month. What was once a tiny group has turned into a larger group of friends. We read it all from Chic Lit to more serious books. Our librarian & friend who organizes it always comes up with a nice list of questions about the book and we have a great discussion. Its a nice evening of discussion and snacks.

For the month of April we are reading The Light Between Oceans. It has gotten rave reviews. I'm really looking forward to this one. Its about a couple who take care of a lighthouse in Australia. They have tried for years to have a baby of their own. One day a boat washes up with a dead man and baby. Its the story of what they do. Do they keep the baby as their own or let the authorties know.

I picked up the audio. So far its a good read. It is read by an australian man.

Looking forward to the book discussion at the end of the month.

Martina's Book Suggestions - Teen Book Suggestions

I'm 12 years old now and I just finished Beautiful Darkness. Beautiful Darkness is the second book in The Caster Chronicles by: Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl. Beautiful Creatures is the first book in this series. It follows a boy named, Ethan Wate. Who lives in Gatlin, South Carolina. He starts having dreams about a girl different from anyone else. But one day a girl moves into town who is exactly like the girl from his dreams. She feels like she doesn't fit in, but not in the way you would think. This series consists of four books. Beautiful Creatures, Beautiful Darkness, Beautiful Chaos, and Beautiful Redemption. There are some really amazing characters that you may be able to connect to. It is brilliantly written and I can't wait to move on to the next! I completely recommend this to teens.

What Mandy is Reading Now

Hi i'm Mandy and i'm reading a book Its called Jake and Lily by Jerry Spinellie. They are twins. Lily loves being exactly the same as Jake because she thinks since there twins they should and haft to be alike. On the other hand Jake thinks they don't haft to be the same because there not the same at all. Jake never gets in trouble because he's like the perfect child that always listens. And Lily is the total opposite of him for example Lily gets in trouble so much that there dad had to find a little door in there house so lily could get in there when ever she got in trouble. But Lily secretly kept putting stuff in it to make it feel like home. She kept trying to get Jake in there but he never wants to. So far its really good and big well for me and im 9 so its big to me i really think you should read it or tell you're child to read it.

My 2 sons loved the Golden books also, but their favorite of all time was

      "Good NIght Moon".

I had to buy a second copy as the first one got read too often.

I still have that one and keep it for the future grand kids.
