Songs and Poems about the Loss of a Mother

His Mommy Died Today
(Please Answer Your Cell Phone Mommy)

This poem, His Mommy Died Today, written by me, is based on true story. Although I didn't personally know this beautiful boy, I was told of this eleven year old's pain over his mother's death. He kept calling his mother's cell phone, after she died, just so he could hear her voice. They eventually had to take the phone from him. (Which I'm not sure I agree with)

This was years ago, but I must say, as a mom of four boys, this little boy and his broken heart is a part of me now. To this little boy, probably a man now, I know it is safe to say, "you are loved". God bless.

Photo: - Personally chosen since I have 4 sons - Vinyl Wall Quote: So there's this boy he kind of stole my heart he calls me "MOM"

Goodbye's (The Hardest Word) - INCREDIBLE Song!

Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) (Enhanced)
Goodbye's (The Saddest Word) (Enhanced)

This song was written for his mother. It's incredibly moving. I found it on youtube quite by accident. It's so beautiful that I can't express it in words. It's simple, but the words along with the video tell a beautiful story of a mother and son.

Did you know that Shania Twain did backup vocals in this song. The song was produced by Mutt Lange in 2002, Shania Twain's husband at the time. The song was released as the third single from Celine Dion's 2002 Album, A New Day Has Come. The song peaked on the Adult Contemporary Billboard at position 27.

The Rose, by Westlife

The Rose
The Rose

If you haven't heard this song, you have to listen to it. This is a cover song of Bette Midler's original version and it's breathtaking. This famous group is exceptionally talented, and they do a fantastic job with this song. The video presentation is done with a man and woman's loss and re-birth of love, however these words are also very suitable for a dedication to the passing of a mom.

The song was also covered by Conway Twitty in 1983 and can be found on his album, Dream Maker.

Did you ever see the movie 'The Rose'. This 1979 classic is worth taking the time to watch.

You Raise Me Up, Josh Groban

One More Day, Diamond Rio

One More Day
One More Day

The lyrics to this song are powerful as they talk about having just one more day with the person you love. It hurts to hear it, especially when you think that right now in this world there are a lot of people wishing for this very thing.

If you're looking for a song to honor a lost loved one this song expresses the pain of loss in a way that's almost personal to the listener. It's as though the song knows what it's listener is feeling. Beautiful lyrics.

This is Your Song, by Ronan Keating - The words make me cry, beautiful

This Is Your Song (2003 Version)
This Is Your Song (2003 Version)

This song was written for his mother. It's incredibly moving. I found it on youtube quite by accident. It's so beautiful that I can't express it in words. It's simple, but the words along with the video tell a beautiful story of a mother and son.

I can't tell you how hard this song is to listen too - It will bring a tear to your eye. It sure does to mine. My own mom is older now, and as is typical of people my age, we're facing things in life that as younger souls we could barely think about. So Mom, 'This is Your Song'. I worry about you.

16 Country Songs About Death

Here you'll find a personal collection of 16 additional powerful songs about loss

The House that Built Me by Miranda Lambert

This song just does me in. The lyrics, the tone, the message...it's the story of my life, and maybe your life too?

She speaks about going home to the house she was raised in, that her father built for the family. This song brings me home to the house my parents built. They still own the home, and I'm fortunate that I still get to go home and sleep in my bedroom, but I know someday, possibly someday soon, the house will be sold, and it hurts to think about it.

I just can't imagine doing what the lyrics say in this song...knocking on the door and asking to go through the house to "take a memory"...hurts to even say it.

Yes, I'm all grown up, and yes many of my kids are grown, but we still go home to mom and dad's and for the brief time I'm there, my heart rests easy. Truly can't get through this song without crying.

Beautiful Stunning Dedication to a Mother & Father - All Because of You by Jimmy Scott

This song and artist deserves attention; it's one of the prettiest mom and dad dedication song's you'll listen to.

Be prepared to shed more tears. The lyrics are simple yet state in just the right expressive words the love and thanks a grown child has for their parents....lyrics like, '...I thank god I was your kid, but now the hours growing late, and these feelings just won't wait' - hard to even type these words...

Beautiful Song - Testify to Love

I remember watching this when it first aired on "Touched by an Angel". This song is so moving, and the episode left me in tears. If you haven't seen this episode and get a chance to watch it, have tissues handy. The song is so beautiful.

For one year on the monthly anniversary of my own father's passing, I would dedicate a song as well as a written dedication to him. When one year passed, on March 5th 2014, this was my final song choice and here are the words.

My deepest sympathies to anyone out there who has lost a parent, it must be the most awful, consuming type of grief any person can experience. These songs really got me! Achingly beautiful and a truly touching lens. Thank you.

My mom died when I was just coming up to 24 years old, it was so sad but children lose their moms a lot younger so it's a great confort to have been with her 24 years. Great lens this has given me some ideas of songs for when I am in 'that mood' I think all you who've lost a mother will understand what I mean.

My mom died when I was sixteen, but she was such a wonderful mother that I'm grateful I had her for the short time that I did. This is such a lovely and touching page, and I was especially moved by your beautiful poem.

I have tears running down my cheeks. I haven't cried over my mom in a long time. She died while I was in Antarctica (I'm not even sure what year it was... 1987?), and while I had gone home during her last operation - I went back to the Ice to finish out the season. The day I left to go back to the Ice, I knew I'd never see her again. I should have stayed home. That's one of the only regrets I have (thus far) in this life. I never really had an opportunity to get along with my mom as an adult who matured beyond the teenage "can't stand my mom" phase. I think she knows - my own belief system is such that I know she knows.

The song "The House that Built Me" and that poem "His Mommy Died Today" have me crying.

A relative of mine lost her husband and she kept his voice on their answering machine so she could hear him when she needed to. He has been gone about 10 years now and she still keeps his voice on the recorder so she can hear him when she needs to. She has moved on with her life but her husband is near her through his voice. I think that boy should have been able to keep his mother's voice near him as well. I hope the voice was not erased so as an adult he still has that keepsake.

The loss of my mother last year made me strongly feel the loss of having lived close enough to her, to share with her my grandmother's loss. There is no getting around the huge impact on me, of my mother's death.

I am glad I found this, you are very talented. I liked your original song, and the poems too. Losing someone we love is not only hard, but it changes us forever if they died unexpectedly, or young.

I am more likely to celebrate a life than mourn a death, but I've had experiences where the grief overwhelms any effort to "be sensible." Any death is like a hole in the world. Some holes, though, are much bigger and impossible to heal.

Beautiful song of yours. When a mother leaves earth is always hard no matter the age. I have sang the original version of Testify to Love by Avalon many times. God's love is what my mom testified and she passed that down to her family. Her going home to Heaven was her heart's desire.

An excellent lens, you are right I need the Kleenex for this one. I love your original song - I hope you put it on youtube as well so it gets more wings. Thanks for the "Touched by an Angel" clip, I had forgotten that series. My mother passed several years ago, but I feel her strong soul with me frequently. My son says he doesn't believe in life after death, I think a time will come when he KNOWS because I will be with him after I leave this Earth plane. Dusted by Squid Angel wings!

I was my mother's caretaker for the 2 years she battled ovarian cancer; when she passed, it was one of the most difficult times in my life (not a day goes by that I don't think of her).

I lost my mother to domestic violence when I was 20 years old. My youngest sibling was 8 at the time. The torture and pain my young siblings endured over the loss of our mom is unbelievable. My pain of loss is everpresent, 37 years now.

When my father died, I had a recording on my voice mail that I listened to frequently. It was actually a few YEARS before I removed his phone number from my cell phone. I just couldn't bring myself to let go of it, no matter how much I knew I should. Some people are so much more than parents or friends. It is hard to lose a parent or a friend, but to lose someone who is so much more is almost unrealistic. People deal with death so differently. Nice to see your lens. Very well done!

Thank you for writing on the subject of death. In our death denying society we need to face it as a fact of life. We are all in flux, birth, death CHANGE. I gave you five stars.
