As a parent, what was your most effective method for combating procrastination in children?

For teenagers this is surely a problem, although I had 3 sons and each one seemed to be motivated a bit differently. I would set a reasonable time frame for some chore, (maybe cleaning their room for instance). Then if it wasn't done and they had plans they were not allowed to go anywhere until the chore was completed. I sometimes set up rewards for jobs well done also, as one of my sons was a bit passive aggressive about the quality of his chores.

I have 3 kids: 2 teens and one elementary aged child.  I don't have the procrastination problem at all.  I think this is because I never let this problem "get away from me."  At the very first signs of this type of behavior, there has to be immediate parental action so the behavior doesn't become an ingrained habit.  I don't have advice for the parents who have this habit already instilled in kids.  So, if I say, for example, to take out the trash, I might hear a sigh or a slight push-back, like "Can I do it after my show ends?"  Uh-no, not after the show.  Now.  All I have to do is give them "the look" and they know life will be a lot better and easier for them if they do it now and do it quickly then to push the envelope.  So, the answer to your question, I supposed, is to give them "the look."  If they already associate "the look" with serious consequences, you don't even have to say a word.  They just get up and do it.  I choose to ignore any sighing, as long as they don't get carried away sighing all over the place.

My mom had the look and started early!  I agree.
