Fun at Grandma's House

Updated on September 26, 2014

Make It Fun for the Grandkids to Visit

I'm a grandma, and I love it! My three grandkids make my day, whether I see them that day or not. So, when they visit, I make sure we all have fun at Grandma's house.

This photo shows my three babies playing Bingo with a vintage Bingo set. None of those fancy new games at Grandma's. Good times!

Check out all the fun things we do together.

Fun at Grandma's House!

Make the time your grandkids

visit a fun time that they'll remember.

Think about their interests then plan at least

one activity around that interest.

When you have different things to do at your house than what the kids have at home, it's fun for grandkids to visit!

Think of tried and true games and toys and keep them on hand for the grandchildren.

What's Special at Grandma's House?

Take advantage of where you live.

There has to be something special about it.

Near my house, a church bell rings

on the hour from 10 am to 6 pm.

The grandkids love listening to the music

then counting the bells.

Play Cash Registers Are Such Fun! Get One and See!

All three of my grandkids go to my toy cash register almost every time they visit. It talks ("That'll be five dollars, please!", "Come again.").

It also lets them slide credit cards through the reader to pretend they're shopping just like mom and dad.

Be a Fun Grandparent

Go for walks with your grandkids. Take along a long-handled magnet, and it'll be a treasure hunt!

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled to find money, too!

Rotary Dial Phones for Sale on eBay - Let your fingers do the dialing

That toy cash register might be popular at this grandma's house, but my vintage rotary dial phone is even more popular! One of my grandkids always brings it from the spare bedroom to the living room and lifts the receiver and holds it to their ear.

They may or may not dial but they carry on a conversation. They eventually do dial because sticking your finger in those little holes and turning it is just fun!

Keep It Fun

While children are little,

take advantage of the fact that

they like to spend time with grandma.

Kids grow up and get bored of grandparents sometimes. I hope this never happens with mine, but it could!

Fun Food to Eat at Grandma's

We love waffles spread with Nutella!

We rarely eat at the table when my grandkids visit. With the help of little hands, we spread a sheet on the living room floor and we have a picnic!

Waffles are a favorite. Sometimes we have bacon (the best food!) with them or ice cream or both!

Make Crafts with Your Grandchildren

I love crafting with my grandkids.

Crafting is a blast with grandkids. You can just have fun with little regard for the end product since just making something is fun in itself. Here are a few ideas for crafting with your grandchildren:

Read to Your Grandkids

Read to your grandchildren.

My oldest grandson is almost 9, but he still sits and listens when I read a story, especially if it's a good one.

Wonderful lens. I'm just getting the slightest inkling that one day I will probably be a Grandmother- eldest two are now 21 and 17 so... not for a while, yet, I hope! But I hope when I do I will be as good at it as you seem to be!!!

I was an only child, so my mom and dad love having our 2 children come over for the weekend. Usually some bubble blowing and yard playing are a must! Thanks for the inspiration.

@Virginia Allain: Virginia, this is because often my kids drop off their kids so it's just us! (Much more fun that way, lots of the time!)

I don't remember having this kind of interaction with my grandmothers. We mostly hung around listening to the grown-ups talking or would go outside and play on our own. What great memories your grandkids will have.
