Fun Music for Kids

Updated on September 13, 2014

Songs That Kids Love

When I was a Childrens' Librarian, music was an important part of my programs for children. I aways began and ended with a song. Music sets a joyful tone and, after a bit of jumping about to a great song, the kids were ready to settle down and listen to a story.

After many years of working with childrens entertainment, I developed a good ear for the type of songs that children appreciate.

I chose to list CDs here, but most of these collections are also available in MP3 format.

So here's my list of favorite song collections for children. Perhaps you remember some of these from your childhood or maybe you played them for your kids. Enjoy the journey.

Photo from my personal archives shows Patches the Dog singing Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again."

Toddler Favorites:

I used these songs a lot in my storytimes.

Toddler Favorites

Tried and true hits. "Wheels on the bus" and "I'm a Little Teapot" arte great action songs. Highly recommended.

Sesame Street: Kids Favorite Songs

This CD got great reviews on Amazon and includes Old MacDonald Had a Farm by Bob Dylan.

Disney Songs

Disney Childrens Favorites. Good old-timey songs like "This Old Man" and "The "Hokey Pokey".

Disney

If you like this one, there are different volumes available.

Songs of America

Great collection of patriotic song like "America the Beautiful", but also includes old favorites such as "She'll Be Comin' Round the Mountain" and "School Days."

Songs of America

Great music for learning American History.

Car Ride Fun

These fun songs are always fun to sing, but they are especially good when sung on a road trip. My favorite:" Supercalifragilistic" from Mary Poppins.

Birthday Party!

Kids Birthday Party Music will get your party going. I love "The Peppermint Twist", "Yakety-Yak" and of course, "Happy Birthday to You."

Silly Songs

Disney Silly Songs is goofy and giggly. Sing old favorites like "Michael Finnegin" and "Boom, Boom, Ain't it Great to Be Crazy?"

Silly Songs

Songs that are fun to sing don't have to make sense! Songs include " Michel Finnegan" (He has whiskers on his chinnegin) and "Ta-ra-boom-de-ay".

Singalong

100 Singalong Songs for Kids. Timeless hits like "Do Your Ears Hang Low?"," John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" and "Oh Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?"

100 Singalong Songs for Kids

Songs you sang with your parents. Re-live these great songs with your kids.

School Days

School House Rock! Who remembers that classic TV show from the sixties and seventies? It's still fun - and educational. I love "I'm Just a Bill" and "Interplanet Janet".

Schoolhouse Rock

The Best of Schoolhouse Rock
The Best of Schoolhouse Rock

Rock and learn with Schoolhouse Rock. Still relevant. Still good educational fun.

Raffi

Singable Songs Collection. "Going to the Zoo" and "Shake My Sillies Out" were always favorites at my storytimes.

Raffi

Raffi was once called "The most popular entertainer in the Western World" by the Washington Post. That might be open to debate but don't try to argue with the kids.

Fun Things to Do With Kid's Music

Rather than just listen to the music, here are some activities to make the songs more memorable and enjoyable.

Dancing:

Songs like "Shake My Sillies Out" by Raffi is a good example of a song that makes kids want to dance.

Puppets:

Using puppets to sing or dance along with the tunes is fun for kids to do.

Playing Along:

Providing instruments that kids can play along with adds interest too. Let the kids try out kazoos, drums, tambourines, or maracas.
