Fun Music for Kids
Songs That Kids Love
When I was a Childrens' Librarian, music was an important part of my programs for children. I aways began and ended with a song. Music sets a joyful tone and, after a bit of jumping about to a great song, the kids were ready to settle down and listen to a story.
After many years of working with childrens entertainment, I developed a good ear for the type of songs that children appreciate.
I chose to list CDs here, but most of these collections are also available in MP3 format.
So here's my list of favorite song collections for children. Perhaps you remember some of these from your childhood or maybe you played them for your kids. Enjoy the journey.
Photo from my personal archives shows Patches the Dog singing Willie Nelson's "On the Road Again."
I used these songs a lot in my storytimes.
Tried and true hits. "Wheels on the bus" and "I'm a Little Teapot" arte great action songs. Highly recommended.

This CD got great reviews on Amazon and includes Old MacDonald Had a Farm by Bob Dylan.

These fun songs are always fun to sing, but they are especially good when sung on a road trip. My favorite:" Supercalifragilistic" from Mary Poppins.

School House Rock! Who remembers that classic TV show from the sixties and seventies? It's still fun - and educational. I love "I'm Just a Bill" and "Interplanet Janet".
Rock and learn with Schoolhouse Rock. Still relevant. Still good educational fun.
Singable Songs Collection. "Going to the Zoo" and "Shake My Sillies Out" were always favorites at my storytimes.
Raffi was once called "The most popular entertainer in the Western World" by the Washington Post. That might be open to debate but don't try to argue with the kids.
Fun Things to Do With Kid's Music
Rather than just listen to the music, here are some activities to make the songs more memorable and enjoyable.
Songs like "Shake My Sillies Out" by Raffi is a good example of a song that makes kids want to dance.
Using puppets to sing or dance along with the tunes is fun for kids to do.
Providing instruments that kids can play along with adds interest too. Let the kids try out kazoos, drums, tambourines, or maracas.
