Fun Summer Activities for Teenagers and Tweens

Updated on July 21, 2014

Things to do for Teenagers in Summer

Looking for things for teenagers and tweens to do over the summer? There's lots to keep kids busy and happy. I have a variety of suggestions ranging from outings, games and get togethers with friends.

Teens and tweens aren't as easily amused as younger children, so coming up with a variety of activities will help them to celebrate a great summer.

Additionally, I have some hobby ideas along with some free, printable coloring pages to help spend those hot weather days.

Aquatic Park Swimming

Aquatic Park Swimming
Aquatic Park Swimming

A great way for kids to cool off during the summer is at water and aquatic parks. Should you be near a water park, you might think about getting a season pass. This way they can go as often as they like.

If you don't have one nearby, you can check to see if there are any aquatic parks in your area. Many are indoor facilities, so even if it isn't warm enough where you live to swim outdoors, kids can enjoy swimming in a climate controlled area.

The prices are usually good. The ones around here are about $5 per session. Many have family discount nights and sometimes even offer free family sessions.

Summer Bus Pass

Ride the Bus

Check to see if your area has a summer bus pass for teens. They're reasonably priced and teens can get to a variety of locations such as the mall and movie theaters.

They have such a pass where I live and it's only $10 for the entire summer. Teens love the freedom and parents don't have to always drive.

Teenage Club

Get teens to form their own summer club and each week they can plan an outing. This way, they have something fun to look forward to each week.

Suggestions include the zoo, video arcade, miniature golf, the mall, the movies, beach, picnic, bowling and local amusement park, if there happens to be one in the area. Otherwise, find out if there are any county fairs during the summer.

See if any of the places have special discount times. Where I live, the local arcade runs specials a few days a week where unlimited video games can be played at specified times for 2 1/2 hours at the cost of seven dollars.

Fun Games for Tweens and Teenagers

Playing Twister
Playing Twister

Consider planning a game night. Teens and tweens can invite their friends over to play a variety of games. You can make it a snack potluck or provide snacks and beverages yourself.

If you are in need of game ideas, I have some for you below that are available from Amazon. These games can also double for a family game night. We personally play all of these at my house and the kids love them.

I know that initially this may seem like a kids game, but it's fun for teens and adults, too. The object is to guess what's on the picture you're wearing by asking a series of questions.

Part Time Jobs for Teenagers

Lawn Mowing Jobs
Lawn Mowing Jobs

Some teens like to get a part time job over the summer to earn some extra money. Older teens shouldn't have much trouble finding jobs, but it will be more of a challenge for younger ones as most places have age restrictions.

An idea is to get some teens together to form their own summer job business. They can make up fliers of their services and post them around. Ideas include walking dogs, picking up dog droppings, watering lawns, mowing, etc.

Being that it's summer, many people go on vacation and could use someone to look after their property while they're away such as bringing in the newspaper and mail, feeding the cats, etc. Teens can brainstorm on what other types of jobs they could do.

Summer Sports for Kids

If your teen likes sports, check to see if there are any summer sports programs in your area. Sometimes, you can find them through your local Parks and Recreation. In addition, keep a look out for signs that advertise summer leagues.

Otherwise, kids can shoot some hoops at your local park or head over to a local school and take advantage of he courts there. Some schools have courts for volleyball or badminton which can be used for free during the summer.

Do you have a child who likes to skateboard? See if you have a skateboard park nearby. If not, consider investing in a couple of ramps or even making them with your teen.

Don't forget about nighttime activities. One of our favorites is to play Frisbee at night with lighted discs.

Video Games for Teenagers

Playstation 3 Picture

Video games are huge with teenagers, especially boys. Some new games will certainly keep them busy during the summer months and not only at home. If you have a teen who enjoys games and has a hand held system and you're planning a vacation that involves driving or an airplane ride, I definitely recommend stocking up on some new games.

I personally like GameStop because you can trade in games and purchase both new and used ones, which greatly cuts down on the amount of money you have to spend.

Some popular games among teens include the Black Ops series, Just Dance 4, Sims games, Battlefield and the Halo series. If you're looking for online games to play, check out Star Wars the Old Republic, Wizard 101 and Minecraft. This is just a small sampling of games that teenagers love to play.

Video Games for Tweens

Like teens, most tweens enjoy playing video games. Online games like Club Penguin, Neopets, Whyville and Wizard 101 are among the favorites at this age.

For girls, some of their favorite games have to do with fashion or animals, such as games in the Petz series.

Boys like games in the Lego series such as Star Wars and Harry Potter. Popular with both are Mario Brother games. Zelda is another one that girls and guys like to play

We've always liked the Super Mario games. What I like in particular about this one is that up to 4 people can play at the same time. This way your child can play with a few friends.

Plan a Movie Night

Oz the Great and Powerful Poster

Kids can chill out with a fun movie night. Be sure to have a variety to choose from. Serve some food and toss in some fun movie trivia. To find trivia, just type in a search for the name of the movie and trivia. You'll be amazed at how many trivia sites there are.

This could also be a fun theme for a slumber party. Have each person who is invited to bring over their favorite movie. Just be sure to have enough popcorn!

Hobbies for a Teenager

Sports Cards Pictures
Sports Cards Pictures

Summer is a great time to pick up a new hobby. It's something that can start now and continue throughout the year. If the child likes music, consider some music lessons such as guitar or piano.

There are many fun things to collect at this age such as sports cards, coins and postcards. Do you have a daughter who enjoys jewelry? How about some jewelry making kits?

If you have a child who enjoys taking pictures, consider photography. How about cooking? You can find some simple recipes that can help teach kids how to cook.

Crafts can also be fun. Just be sure that the craft matches the age. If you have a bunch of family photographs that are just put aside, get some scrapbook supplies and let kids get creative making a scrapbook. You could even make one special for the summer.

Teen Volunteer Opportunities

Feeding a Kitten
Feeding a Kitten

Does your child like to help others? If so, many organizations will work with teen volunteers. Our family happens to love animals, so we foster kittens until they are ready to be adopted.

If you're interested, check with your local PetCo or Pet Smart and ask them if they have any groups they work with. If you've been to one of these on the weekends, most likely you've seen a group there doing kitten and cat adoptions.

There are also organizations who need help with fostering dogs and rabbits as well. The fun is that you get to have an animal in your home temporarily with the satisfaction of knowing you are helping the animal to get a forever home.

Coloring Pages for Teenagers

Coloring Pencils
Coloring Pencils

Just because children become teenagers, it doesn't mean they still don't like to color. It all depends on the particular person. Even some adults still enjoy coloring. Teens just need pages that are more detailed and not babyish.

Below I have some coloring pages that would work well for teens. Some are geared more for the girls, while others are geared more for the guys. They are all printable and free.

Back in the day, we lived for the beach and fun in the sun. There were so many days I would leave at dawn and stay out until dark. The freedom of summer was wonderful.

For the most part I played tennis day in and day out. After a rainfall we would even play modified games to work around the puddles. But I babysat regularly so there was no boredom at our home, and our parents never had to think of ways to entertain us because we always wanted to earn some money, so we also did odd jobs in the neighborhood.

I love all your suggestions for teenage kids especially the water park. They could also hold an all day movie marathon where they pick up a box set of an old classic movie series and watch it all day. (Like Pirates of the Caribbean or Back to the Future) Many movies have 3, 4,or even 5 movies in their series and this would certainly keep them busy for a full day lol.
