Letter L: Alphabet Activities for Kids

Updated on October 17, 2013

From lemonade to linguine and from lions to llamas, we explored a lot of things while learning the letter L!

We did leaf rubbings, painted on lace, and read about lighthouses. My daughter also did a lot of worksheets that I'd made for her. They're available for you to use too, just click the links. They're free.

I've also included links to a bunch of other free printables, plus fun videos about the letter L.

Alphabet Food and Snacks

These foods are a fun way to incorporate letters into any Alphabet Activity Day! You could serve them the way they are, and make a game of finding the letter you're focusing on. Or you could be all OCD like me, and actually separate out all the As, Bs, and Cs, etc., put them in little baggies and only serve one letter at a time, to help strengthen recognition.

For our letter sorting activity, I made red and white lighthouses, and cut the Ls into the shape of water drops.

We read this book pretty often. I love the lyrical text, and my daughters loves the sounds that the boats and lighthouse and bridge make.

Either way, perfect for Letter L day!

For the lion, I had pre-cut the face, tail, and feet. My daughter, obviously, was unhappy about the large amount of negative space on the paper, and felt that it needed to be filled. :)

We made the lizard much the same way we made the lion.

This was something we'd never done together before, so I thought this would be a good time to introduce rubbings.

Both girls helped me collect some leaves from the backyard, and we rubbed paperless crayons over the paper with the leaves underneath.

Since you need a hard surface, we did it right on the floor instead of the table.

This worksheet was a lot of fun. We just filled in the llama with glue and she covered it with torn-open cotton balls.

All of the worksheets I made for Letter L are available for free at my blog. It's easier for me to host the PDFs there.

L is for Lace

Grandma had a big box full of old lace, so she gave us a piece, and we used it to make letter Ls. You could easily buy lace at the store, but I like to be able to recycle old craft scraps.

We took another piece of scrap lace, and I taped it down to some paper.

I gave my daughter some different paints and a sponge brush, and let her paint over the lace.

It makes an interesting pattern, although there were places where she swept the brush over the lace instead of just dabbing it, and so the patterns were a bit smeared, but it was still neat.

I was trying something different with this one. I asked her to circle the largest lemonade in each box, but she decided that she'd rather match the largest ones by connecting them.

Either way, she got the basic principle.

To incorporate a cooking activity in Letter L day, we went with lemonade. (Could've done lasagne, but that's a lot of work...)

Anyway, I couldn't find a juicer anywhere, so we just poked the lemons with forks and squeezed them over a strainer.

Then we mixed some sugar and water into the lemon juice. Voila!

For lunch we had some very simple linguine. After it was cooked, I stirred in some butter and Parmesan cheese. So easy, but the girls absolutely loved it!
