Living In Missouri

Updated on September 13, 2013

Living The Missouri Life

Hi ya yes indeed I do live in the state of missouri born and raised here along with my seven brothers & sisters as the song goes we were poor but we had fun. We injoyed growing up here in the south a place called the bootheel of missouri. The surrounding land is mostly flatland with the hills being north of where we live. And this is the school I attended when I was very young along with my brothers & sisters. It was named the Hickerson School one classroom one teacher, and about 30 kids which walked to school every day. Some would walk from about 3 miles other shorter distances. Our one teacher made sure we got the best education she could deliver. And did you know that some of my class mates went on to Mo State College located up north of our area in Springfield Missouri to obtain a better education to start their careers. Our little one room country school was loved so much from everyone around our community that it was moved to its new location, it sits now right near down town new madrid missouri and has become a place in history for all that attended this small school.

Our Schools Location

East Of New Madrid Township

Yes our little school was located east of new madrid along side of the large levy that held the mississippi flood waters back to prevent flooding of our school and the surrounding homes. We had several mishaps with flooding when we attended thIS small country school in the 1960s water reached the floor of our house which set 13ft at the front of our house and about 16ft at the rear of our house off the ground. But our school teachers house was built flat on the ground and the water reached the ceiling in her home. One day after the water receaded all the students helped to clean her house from the mud and stinch that came along with being flooded by the Big Muddy Mississippi River. Those were some of the good old days we injoyed living in the bootheel of missouri.

Missouri People

Missouri Saying

The people of missouri are proud people we work hard and live life to the fullest we injoy fishing hunting and just plain old having fun. We injoy family life you know visiting family members and freinds scattered abroad across this great state. We did not always have it easy some still don't i came from a working family where we made our living by picking cotton chopping weeds from the crops hard work from daylite to dark slept hard and back to work the next day. Yes in my day times were hard but as i look back on it i think we were blessed, their is one thing i remember well we had great parents they would deliver on their promises to make sure things got done in a timely matter. We listened to our parents and teachers we strived for an education to better ourselves to go out in the world better prepared. Even though after being raised in this fashion we at first did not beleive in all we heard for reasons we had been taught being from missouri someone would make a suggestion about something that we had never heard of ! We said show me and because we would say these words we bacame the ShowMe State

I am proud of it, I lived here all my life would not change it for the rest of the world not saying people from other countries shouldn't be proud of their country but I like mine best. If you live in the state of missouri or another state I would love to hear about it and your comment. I also would add that we have a great team in our state their called the missouri tigers. If you have a favorite team of your state let us know. Smokey
