Why Does Michelle Duggar Need To Have So Many Children

Why Does Michelle Duggar Need To Have So Many Children?

I am sure that almost everybody has heard of the mega family the Duggars. This is an Arkansas family from Tontiton that has 19 children. To date they have been blessed with 19 children, (10 boys and 9 girls) Joshua (& wife Anna and first grandchild Mackynzie with another grandchild on the way this year), Jana & John-David (twins), Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jedidiah & Jeremiah (twins), Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer, Jordyn Grace and Josie. Their family has been featured on “14 Children and Pregnant Again!”, “16 Children and Moving In!”, “Raising 16 Children!”,“On The Road With 16 Children!” & "Duggar's Big Family Album". They have also appeared on numerous National and International TV shows including The Early Show, The Today Show, The View, Fox & Friends, Italian Public Television, KBS (Korean Broadcasting System), Discovery Home & Health (UK & Australia), Jimmy Kimmel Live, Fox News Network, CNN, MSNBC and others. They have done countless interviews with radio talk show hosts around the world including NPR, AP Radio, CBS Radio, FOX Radio and others. They have appeared in various magazine and newspapers including Parents, New York Times, Dallas Morning News, Chicago Tribune, Ladies Home Journal, People and many others. From the United States, Canada, Korea, Japan, China, India, New Zealand, Australia, France and Germany. It seems that they have a large following of fans and critics. But what would motivate a woman to have so many children ?

Michelle Duggar & Jim Bob married July 21st, 1984. She was just 17 years old. Not wanting to have a baby until they were able to afford one she went on the birth control pill. She had her first child, Joshua, four years later. After the birth she went back onto the birth control pill. Not realizing that she could still get pregnant while on the pill she conceived and very shortly had a miscarriage. Blaming the pill for the miscarriage she and Jim Bob decided to have as many children as they could as they felt that children are a blessing from God. This is the reason that they have given the public. But lets dig a little deeper into other reasons she may have done this

It is rumored that the Duggars are part of the Quiverfull sect. This is a religious based community that believes that God wants us to have as many children as we can and not use birth control. Some families have a few and many of them have mega families as the Duggars have. For those who can not have a large family they do believe in adoption as the child that is picked by them is a child that God has led them to. I do not believe that they are part of the Quiverfull sect. This is an excuse that they have latched onto so that they she can have so many

We have also heard that she has “baby hunger.” But Michelle does not fit this category as it is usually older women that want children and have not been able to conceive. Or younger ones that have not been able to conceive. It is a desperation in wanting a baby. Michelle has no problem conceiving as we know

With each pregnancy that Michelle has she has the potential from a large range of health problems such as dysfunctional labor, postpartum hemorrhage, heart attack & stroke, pre-eclampsia, placenta previa, uterine prolapse & rupture, gallbladder disease, anemia & nutritional deficiencies, dental problems, blood clots, incontinence, intestinal disorders, and death. Shortly after her 19th child she had her gallbladder taken out because she was having problems with a gallbladder stone. We also know that her last child was born over three months premature weighing about one pound six ounces and spent about six months in the NICU until she grew to her birth weight and gestational term and was stabilized. She was born lactose intolerance and it was found out that Michelle was not producing the quality of milk to satisfy any of her babies. Instead of producing whole milk she was producing skim milk. She is a believer in feeding all her babies whenever they are awake. Michelle produced 500 gallons of breast milk in a five month period while Josie was in the NICU

I believe that Michelle, who had married so young, found that Jim Bob is not a very romantic man and he shows the love, concern and caring to Michelle only when she is pregnant or on TV. These are feelings that all wives need from their husbands and the only way she can get these from him is to have all these children. I hope that now that the older kids are able to show her their love, caring and joy of her being their mother that she will think about not having another child for fear of her or the baby dying

Instead of spending money on Michelle, Jim Bob, throws the money that they make from their TV show 19 Kids and Counting away on buses and his electronic toys. Jim Bob considers himself her spiritual leader and I imagine that all she has heard all throughout her marriage is his favorite bible passage, “be fruitful and multiply.” After about 27 years of marriage that would probably be ingrained in Michelle’s mind. I find this a form of domestic abuse. So in order to please him and feel like a wife she keeps having babies at a risk to herself, the children she already has and her unborn baby

It is time that Michelle tells Jim Bob that enough is enough and find other pastimes and pleasures to fulfill herself as a woman, wife and mother. I hope that she looks at her children that she already has and the one that she nearly lost and realize that she has more to offer as a woman in her own right

The Duggars DO fully endorse the Quiverfull sect/beleifs (as stated before most of it was hushed up)...and vice versa.

Everything we do in this world affects everyone else. People need to stop with this arrogant beleif of "Live and let live" as long as you're not personally involved or physically affected by what others do!!! There was a time where we could stand by that simple beleif, but not anymore:( Have some personal accountability, and use those brains that GOD graced you with!!! This isn't the 1500's anymore, and the fact's not normal or right to have that many children! The Duggars, like so many others use God as an exscuse for their way of life, and it's sickening! All you have here, is a sad man and woman who let a personal tragedy affect their good judgement, and now it's GODS WILL???

To Blackberry: If by "Their taking care of them we're not", you mean "Their" as in the Duggar daughters AKA=buddies/slaves...then you're right:) One year on her breast, and Michelle hands the child off to another CHILD!!! If she has to many to handle without the help of her daughters (which she does), then that's her fault, and those girls should not have to pay the price for her failure as a mother...and yes, SHE IS A FAILURE!!!

Having this many children is not "Gods Will" for the's a money making game they play. Case in point would be Josh and Anna Duggars recent statement of..."We are currently looking to beat our parents record (so far) of 19, and go for atleast 25 children ourselves"!!! Does that really soung like Gods will? Or does it sound more like a boy who learned well from his fathers "Christian Example"???

P.S. I do beleive in God, but that he should not be used as an exscuse, and doesn't like it much! I beleive he wants you to have children...but to be SMART about it!!!

It is not the matter of how many children they have, but the compulsion that drives Michele to have them. She has too many to take care of and give her undivided attention too. Unfortunately we see that she is only a baby making machine that throws them to one of the oldest girls because she is pregnant again. It is nothing but children raising children and they are not being taught the most basic needs that only an adult can provide, such as how to live in today's society and tolerance to the difference of other people and their views on religion and beliefs. We can not even judge them against today's children because they are cloistered in their compound and lacking all social skills that today's children have gotten by being around their peers that are not their own family menbers. Terefore today's children are way ahead of the Duggar children.

This hub is crazy. They are conservative Baptists not some kind of Quiverfull sect. How many children they have is their business. Their taking care of them we're not. The kids seem to be nice kids, not something that can said about to many kids now days.

I'm not sure if anyone has ever thought of this before, but I'm willing to bet Jimbob laid a huge guilt trip on Michelle after the miscarrige she had many years ago. I went through it with my ex, and I know how it feels to be told you are a terrible woman and/or Christian for wanting to take responsibility for your own body. It is a womans choice, so Jimbob would not have had a say in the matter had she made the sole decision to use Birth Control. Imagine the power he would have over her emotionally when she miscarried, and he told her that it was punishment from God, and the only way to be forgiven was to have as many "Blessings" as they could! It's really not far fetched at all to imagine this.

Dont get me wrong though. Michelle is just as guilty, if not more than Jimbob. In the end it's her decision, and however guilty she felt, there is no exscuse for her behavior. The sad thing is the children are paying the price:-(

Yes, I agree that Michele and Jim Bob are delusional and need psychiatric help immediately. The children have been ignored from the parents since they were nine months old or even younger because the ohhs and ahhs that they get from people over the babies have stopped by then. The children have also been abused by the parents not caring for them or even teaching each child what is really needed to get by in this world. But that is not baby hunger. Look up the definition given by the psychiatrist. It borders on the desire that everyone should hold the mother and father in high esteem in our and the worlds eye. When losing the public eye they have the sick urge to have another child to place them up on that pedestal where they feel that they are "special" and privleged in society. It runs along the same line as munchausen syndrome except that they do not kill the child. But the sick effects are the same. They just toss the child to an older one and carry on with their breeding.

To tessalou: the Duggars are a dysfunctional family. Michelle Duggar is in need of psychiatric therapy. No intelligent and rational person has that many children. However, it is not only the Duggars but the average large family. In large families, the parents do not raise their children. That responsibility is delegated to the oldest child and oldest children in the family. That is why small families are better than large families. In the small family, parents raise their children and have more emotional and financial resources to devote to each child. Michelle Duggar and the average woman who has a lot of children have baby hunger i.e. they always want new children to care for without considering the effects on the children still here. To me, any person who has a large family is delusional and needs to undergo psychiatric care.

It is selfish and she is putting her odd interests before the well-being of the children. The children are being robbed of a childhood. Her and her husband claim it's in God's hands, however, no matter what God wants she will continue to have children if she keeps having children if they keep having unprotected sex. It has nothing to do with God, this is just what happens when sperm and eggs are put together. They are delusional and crazy. Great article!

lindatymensky it is true that the children do suffer in megafamilies. But that is another topic, within itself, that I will be writing on. Keep watch on my hubpages for more articles on the Duggars.

Interesting question. I wonder if anyone is paying attention to the dreams, problems, fears, hopes, needs, etc. of the 19 children.
