Poems for children

Updated on July 19, 2010

Food themed Poetry for kids age 4 - 8 years.

I have been a teacher for 18 years and I always love looking for quality literature to share with the children in my class. Here are a few of my favourite kids poems suitable for 4 - 8 years.

The spaghetti poems are particularly fun!

Food poems

Make sure you've eaten ~ they'll make you hungry!

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!

You're wonderful stuff,

I love you spaghetti,

I can't get enough,

You're covered with sauce

And you're sprinkled with cheese,

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!

Oh, give me some please.

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!

Piled high in a mound,

You wiggle, you wriggle,

You squiggle around.

There's slurpy spaghetti

All over my plate.

Spaghetti! Spaghetti!

I think you are great.

(Jack Prelutsky)

On Top Of Spaghetti

On top of spaghetti,

All covered with cheese,

I lost my poor meatball,

When somebody sneezed.

It rolled off the table,

And onto the floor,

And then my poor meatball,

Rolled out of the door.

It rolled in the garden,

And under a bush,

And then my poor meatball,

Was nothing but mush.

The mush was as tasty

As tasty could be,

And early next summer,

It grew into a tree.

The tree was all covered

With beautiful moss,

It grew lovely meatballs,

All covered with sauce.

So if you eat spaghetti,

All covered with cheese,

Hold on to your meatballs,

And don't ever sneeze.

My Mom's Spaghetti

My mom makes disgusting spaghetti

with horseradish sauce and sardines.

She tops it with pickles and mustard,

bananas and barbecued beans.

She serves it for supper on Sunday.

On Monday we have it for lunch.

It's breakfast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

By Thursday, you guessed it, it's brunch.

I don't like to hurt my mom's feelings.

I said that I loved it. (I lied.)

I always gave mine to our doggy.

And that's why our poor doggy died.

So next time you serve us spaghetti,

dear mother, don't make it like that.

Please serve it with red sauce and meatballs,

and that way it won't kill the cat.

Spaghetti

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Heaped in a mound;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Winds, winds around.

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Slips, dips, and trips;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Slithers and drips;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Slurps, sloops, and droops;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Comes in groups;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Twists, turns, and bends;

Spaghetti,

Spaghetti,

Never ever ends!

Oodles of Noodles

I love noodles. Give me oodles.

Make a mound up to the sun.

Noodles are my favorite foodles.

I eat noodles by the ton.

Mashed Potatoes

Mashed potatoes, mashed potatoes,

Piled up high,

Mashed potatoes, mashed potatoes,

Up to the sky.

Mashed potato clouds,

Scoop it all up with a giant spoon!

Popcorn

Pop, pop, pop

Says the popcorn in the pan.

Pop, pop, pop

You may catch me if you can.

Pop, pop, pop

As they scamper across the heat.

Pop, pop, pop

They are very good to eat!

Pop, pop, pop

Goes the popcorn in the pan

Pop pop pop

Try to catch me if you can

Pop pop pop

Go my kernels bright and yellow

Pop pop pop

I'm a happy little fellow

pop pop pop pop pop pop pop

Pop, Pop, Pop!

Pour the corn in the pot.

Pop, Pop, Pop!

Shake it till it's hot.

Pop, Pop, Pop!

Lift the lid. What have we got?

POPCORN!

I always eat my peas with honey;

I've done it all my life.

They do taste kind of funny

but It keeps them on my knife
