Looking for a fun way to help preschoolers learn about obedience and laws? Create and eat edible 10 Commandments, play Cops and Robbers after reading about police officers, act of the fall of Adam and Eve, and more in this fun lesson or "play date" activity! I created this "lesson" to do as a two hour "play date" with my children and some of their friends, ages 3-6. Use this fun lesson with your class, family, preschool, or homeschool group!

Friction

1. Read and discuss Galatians 6:7b & Romans 13:2 .

2. Discuss friction and read Forces Make Things Move by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley about friction.

3. Show friction by allowing children to compare toy cars rolling on tile verses rolling on carpet.

YOU WILL NEED: a toy car for each child

This does a great job at explaining forces in a manner that even my preschoolers can understand, and it has wonderful illustrations that keep their attention.

Disobedience & Consequences

4. Read about Adam & Eve's fall. We used The Fall Into Sin by Nancy I. Sanders . Have the children act it out as you direct them through each action and repeat after you the lines. Discuss obedience and consequences.

YOU WILL NEED: props such as a snake puppet, a piece of fruit, & toy swords (for angel's flaming swords)

5. Read Curious George. We read Curious George and the Firefighters by H. A. Rey. Discuss how curiosity doesn't mean you can disobey.

Any Curious George book is good to show someone being disobedient and causing problems on account of it.

10 Commandments

6. Briefly discuss the 10 Commandments. Help children to make 2 "stone" tablets out of graham crackers and frosting.

YOU WILL NEED: 1 1/2 graham crackers per child, 1 plastic knife per child, 1 napkin per child, & white frosting

Police Officers

7. Read a book about police officers such as Police Officers on Patrol by Kersten Hamilton.

8. Play Cops & Robbers.

This is a cute book that describes how police officers help 4 different people who show up at the police station that day. It is perfect for preschoolers as it has cute illustrations and rhyming text.

More Great Picture Books We Enjoyed Reading During This Lesson

The Magic School Bus Plays Ball: A Book About Forces by Joanna Cole explores how friction affects playing baseball as Miss Frizzle's class tries to play baseball on a frictionless field. My children really enjoyed it! The Fall into Sin - Arch Books by Nancy Sanders is the picture book that we used to tell the story of Adam and Eve's fall into sin. It has appealing illustrations! The Story about Ping by Marjorie Flack is another good picture book option that includes consequences to not paying attention and doing what should not be done. Our favorite books on police officers are Police Officers (Kids Can Read) by Paulette Bourgeois, Keeping You Safe: A Book About Police Officers (Community Workers) by Ann Owen, Richard Scarry's A Day at the Police Station (Look-Look) by Richard Scarry, and A Day in a Life of a Police Officer (Level 1: Beginning to Read) by Linda Hayward.
