Alarmingly, an estimated 11 percent of teenagers will suffer from teen depression by the time they reach 18 years of age. The risk of teen depression increases as the teenager gets older. Major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability among young Americans between 15 and 44 years of age.
Girls are more likely to suffer from teen depression than boys. Studies have found that teenagers suffering from teen depression show different signs and symptoms to typical adult depression. Teens with depression appear to be grouchy, sulky or sad. They often get into trouble at school.
