12 Popular Coffee Beverages Based on Espresso

Updated on March 29, 2016

Regular coffee or espresso based?

Do you like coffee but think that drip coffee is too weak and espresso too strong? You still have a choice! There are various espresso based coffee drinks so you can enjoy the best of both worlds!

Try some of the recipes listed below and tell us which is your favorite.

Is there a special espresso recipe?

Or is an espresso and espresso?

Believe it or not, there is a special recipe for the basic espresso!

A single espresso or solo requires 7 grams of finely ground coffee and enough hot water to make a 60 ml or 2 oz cup. For a double espresso or doppio you will need double the amount (14 grams), and for a triplo you will naturally need to triple the quantity.

To make espressos you will need an espresso machine and I recommend the Nespresso CitiZ&milk because it's very easy to use. Learn more about choosing a machine at my espresso lens. Did you know that espresso is commonly called café in Italy? And in Spain it is café espresso or café solo, indicating coffee by itself, no sugar or milk added.

1. Americano

The Americano is simply one shot of espresso diluted with hot water and the ratios may vary according to the one who makes or consumes the beverage.

2. Cappuccino

Most people have heard of a cappuccino and it may be more popular than the espresso itself. I had my first cappuccino before I ever tried an espresso and it's one of my favorites.

A cappuccino is made of one shot of espresso with wet foam (steamed milk).

3. Cortado

Cortado stands for short and is made with one shot espresso and the same quantity of milk, little foam.

4. Cubano

The cubano is an espresso brewed with demerara sugar over the ground coffee. This is brown, raw cane sugar.

See variations of the cubano below.

5. Cortadito

A cortadito is similar to a cortado with equal or less milk, but since it's a variation of the cubano it is slightly sweetened.

6. Con leche

Literally means (coffee) "with milk." This beverage is the second variation of the cubano and is a traditional breakfast drink in Cuba. Con leche is served separately, so the consumer pours his own shot of cubano into the glass of milk.

Choose between classic, modern or fun style. Or get one of each to match your moods.

7. Colada

The colada is meant to be shared. It consists of 4 to 6 shots of cubano served in one glass, which is then poured into demitasse cups to share.

8. Italiano

Italiano is basically a short Americano and the ratio is 1:1 espresso and hot water.

9. Latte

Everyone knows the Latte right? Latte means "milk" in Italian and this drink consists of 2 shots of espresso with three times as much milk.

10. Long Black

The Long Black is opposite of an Americano and is a double espresso added to an equal amount of water, but keeping the crema intact.

You will love the Nespresso CitiZ&milk, because it's a no-fuss espresso machine that will take up little space on your counter. And you have to admit, red is sexy!

11. Machiatto

The Machiatto is another popular espresso based drink and is made from 1 shot of espresso with a small amount of milk.

12. Red eye

The Red eye is simply a shot of espresso combined with drip brew coffee. Talking about a caffeine fix! This drink borrowed its name from overnight "red eye" flights from the West Coast to the East Coast where travelers needed the extra boost to stay awake.
