About the fruit

Almond is the name of the edible seed of the small and deciduous almond tree , which is native in South Asia and the Middle East. These trees grow fruits, drupe s, which consist of a green, outer coat (hull ) and a hard nut (about 2cms big) inside the coat in which the almond lies. The drupes are picked when they get mature enough, as the outer hull dries off the hard nut.

Almonds are usually sold 3 different ways: blanched, shelled or unshelled. In this article I will talk about the benefits of the first two almonds, so the blanched (the white seed without the seedcoat) and the shelled (the seed right after its hard shell was removed) almond.

Tips for buying

If you are planning to buy some almonds to enjoy all of the above mentioned positive effects, the best is if you buy unshelled almonds, as during transportation many outer, negative effects can affect the seed. You can unshell the almond easily at home – you just need a simple hammer and a hard surface to crack it. (Be careful!)

Also, make sure that the almonds you buy are looking healthy (light-brownish colour), they don’t have a rancid smell and each have about an equal weight (none of them are rotten inside). At home, you can store almonds in a dry and cool place for years.

I absolutely love almonds, and it is always good to really like a food that actually does you so much good. Most things that people really like don't provide them with any benefits nutritionally.

A lot of benefits. I like to eat a handful of nuts for a snack. I do cook with almonds quite often. I like the pictures of the different stages they run through.

I always like hearing the things I eat are giving me greater benefits then imagined.
