Do You Love Weird Food Combinations?

Imagine biting into a thick, juicy cheeseburger. One that is loaded with onions, pickles...maybe even some jalapenos.

And of course, just the right amount of...

Peanut Butter?

That's right. Who wouldn't love a peanut butter burger?

When I confronted a friend about his peculiar culinary illness, he challenged me to do a little research into the secret underworld of the everyday peanut butter sandwich. Apparently, peanut butter is no longer a stand-alone food.

For several weeks now, I have been interrogating people on their PB habits. And I've uncovered some shocking results. Here are over 15+1 different ways to make a peanut butter sandwich (the burger was a freebie):

1. Peanut Butter and Pickles

I've known some people who did this. But I had no idea how popular it was until I started doing this article. It looks like pickles are competing with jelly to see who can be PB's best friend.

Paul is a proud Pickle and PB eater. His secret to a successful sandwich is to pile a layer of dill pickles over crunchy peanut butter (he swears that crunchy is best), and then top with a few sweet pickles.

That's just gross, Paul!

3. Cinnabutter Delight

Mindy, at least, seems to think peanut butter should only go with other sweet foods. Her favorite dessert treat is made by spreading peanut butter and apple jelly between two hot Pillsbury cinnamon rolls.

That's a whole lot of sweet, Mindy!

2. Meaty Sandwich

For some, peanut butter is a handy substitute for any sandwich spread. For instance, Justin grabs his jar of JIF whenever he runs out of mustard.

But sometimes he likes to make this special meaty sandwich on purpose:

  1. Spread one slice of bread with peanut butter
  2. Add one thick slice of Braunschweiger (that is a type of pork liver sandwich spread)
  3. Top with a slice of cheese
  4. Add a dab of relish
  5. Spread other slice of bread with mayonnaise

Yuck. I hate relish!

4. Peanut Butter and Potato Chip Sandwich

I confess that I am that person who crunches up potato chips and adds them to meat sandwiches. My daughter however loves to make her own sandwiches, and takes great pride in creating a peanut butter and Doritoes (the nacho cheese kind) sandwich.

She isn't alone. Chips are almost as popular as pickles when it comes to adding something new to a peanut butter sandwich. Some of the most common chips include:

  • Sour cream and onion
  • Plain potato chips
  • Tortilla chips

I guess they don't know about the pickle flavored chips?

5. Peanut Butter Tuna Sub

A local vendor lists an unusual item on her menu. I had to ask why she ever thought a peanut butter sub was a good idea.

According to her, a customer requested once that she spread the miniature sub rolls with peanut butter before loading it with tuna salad.

She wouldn't share her tuna salad secret, so you'll have to use your own favorite recipe. However, she says that she sells dozens of these every season, and one of the most requested toppings is french fried onions.

One day, it may replace corndogs...

6. Peanut Butter Onion Surprise

"Mark", a stay-at-home-dad, decided to start experimenting in the kitchen when he and his kids tired of bologna sandwiches and carrot sticks.

Although his sandwich creation is his favorite lunch-time indulgence, his kids insists that he learn how to cook scrambled eggs.

For Mark's sandwich, start with two pieces of oat bread. In a bowl, mix peanut butter, finely chopped sweet onions, and golden raisins.

According to Mark, you can omit the raisins, but he feels they are a needed element. "They give the sandwich an element of surprise."

We thought that was what the onions did, Mark!

7. Almost Reeses!

Mary and Zach seem to be on the right track. They make these sinfully delicious desserts for special events:

  1. Toast two waffles until just golden.
  2. Smear each waffle with peanut butter.
  3. Sprinkle on a liberal helping of chocolate chips
  4. Top with a "sauce" of chocolate syrup.
  5. Heat in toaster oven until slightly melted.

A scoop of vanilla ice cream makes it great, they promise!

8. Not Your Mama's Grilled Cheese!

Grilled cheese sandwiches are almost as popular as peanut butter sandwiches. A good reason to combine the two? Ellie thinks so.

She takes two peanut buttered slices of bread, adds two pieces of Swiss cheese between them, and grills sautees them in real butter in a skillet.

Although she generally uses white bread, she does suggest trying raisin bread. Or if you are really adventurous, potato bread.

9. Asian Influence Sandwich

A.J. a serviceman, has been around the world, and has tried lots of food from different cultures. Still, he likes to come home to a good ol' American peanut butter sandwich.

Well, he does like a little "abroad" influence, though. His favorite sandwich is turkey coldcuts, peanut butter, and cold, leftover stir-fried veggies.

That actually makes sense, since peanuts are used in many stir-fry recipes. Not sure how it would taste on a sandwich though...

10. Peanut Butter and Cucumber

Some people don't like to wait for their pickles to ferment. I spoke to three different people who said they liked slices of fresh cucumber on their PB sandwiches.

There were some differences though.

One person preferred crunchy peanut butter and salted cucumbers. Another liked creamy peanut butter, and added mayo to her sandwich. And the last person said any peanut butter would do, but he preferred slightly unripe cucumbers and a slice of tomato.

11. Peanut Butter Coleslaw Sandwich

Pushing the outer limits of creativity, Donna claims the world's best sandwich is made from peanut butter and KFC's coleslaw. No other coleslaw, she claims, has just the right amount of tang and moisture.

She also says that whereas it seems logical to just mix the ingredients in a bowl before making the sandwich, it is better to separate the ingredients. These sandwiches are what her sons like to take in their lunch boxes.

Surprise, lunch thief bullies!

12. Peanut Butter and Bacon

Three people agreed they liked cucumbers with their peanut butter. But oh, the bacon people! Some said they had tried the combination and liked it. Others claimed they had never thought of it before, but that they would definitely try it!

The most popular combination was simply peanut butter and crisp bacon. A few people admitted to adding cheese and sometimes mayonnaise.

One gentleman said that he always BLT's with peanut butter. Another said they had used bacon, PB and ketchup.

Hmmm...looks like bacon is giving the pickle lovers a run for the money.

Oh wait. Lets not forget George. George insists that the ideal sandwich is made with white bread, Smuckers peanut butter mixed with honey, bacon and...yep. Pickles.

More Peanut Butter Combos

Still hungry? Here are 3 more ideas gleaned from family and friends. All of these combos had at least two people who raved about their deliciousness. I'll let you decide:

13. Peanut Butter Cheerio Sandwich

14. Peanut Butter and grilled chicken

14. Peanut Butter with refried beans.

15. Peanut Butter and cream cheese with green olives.

Peanut Butter and Jelly is So Yesterday

I was surprised by the number of people out there that slip something a little more exotic than jam into their peanut butter sandwich. It was no easy job to get people to spit out their secret sandwich affairs either. I approached total strangers and asked them about something they would never discuss in polite company.

I was regarded with suspicion. I was laughed at. But a good writer never backs down until their job is complete.

The sad part is that I put so much work into this example of investigative reporting, yet I will most likely never, ever eat one of these sandwiches. Quite frankly, they all sound pretty gross to me. Disgusting even.

I'm all for being adventurous...but you won't catch me eating a liver and peanut butter sandwich.

Because, well....

I HATE peanut butter!

Yikes! Some combos I sure wouldn't have thought of. Pickles? Couldn't do it.

As a kid, I used to eat peanut butter and mayonnaise sandwiches. All the time. They were one of my favorites. Sliced banana could be added, but more often than not, I left it off.

I was raised on peanut butter and mayo sandwiches. No jelly or jam for us. When I grew into a rebellious teen, I lost the mayo and added potato chips (plain). Thanks for this gastronomical tour of the peanut butter sandwich! Voted up and shared.

I don't think so, but it was an interesting read. :)

Now that's downright funny! You can't go wrong with peanut butter, but some of these combos do look a little suspicious. My favorite is peanut butter and bacon, which I've been eating for years. Trying some of the others might prove interesting, though.

My daughters sometimes like peanut butter with marshmallow cream, and of course peanut butter and honey. I like peanut butter, but don't like it in sandwiches. If I have to have one, I have it with just peanut butter. I've also made grilled peanut butter and jelly and peanut butter and jelly roll-ups with tortillas.

@Papawwrites--I agree! I can actually feel my mouth lock up at just the thought of peanut butter and pickles.

@Act3 Quite a few people mentioned eating the peanut butter and mayo. I can't personally get my mouth around the idea, but it must have something going for it! :)

I didn't know there were so many weird combinations out there. Some of them had my stomach turning. The only things I like with my peanut butter are jelly, honey, and bananas but never at the same time.

I don't think my sister thought of some of these combinations. I will let her know she should try some of them :-)

@OldRoses--Lol! Like the rebellion of potato chips over mayo. Thanks for contributing to the research. I'm beginning to think PB&J people might be the minority!

@Bill---What? What? Not up for a new experience? Can't say I blame ya. Ever since I wrote the article, I've had bad dreams about peanut butter and coleslaw. *shudder*

@MixBejabbers--I just can't get my head around PB and bacon. To me, the only companion for peanut butter is chocolate! Glad you enjoyed, and please let me know if you try one of these!

The two tastes cancel each other out! Great hub idea! UP!
