2 Sausage Appetizer Recipes

Updated on March 12, 2011

Are you looking for a hearty appetizer recipe idea? Consider serving one of these delicious sausage appetizers (or both!) at your next gathering – or the next time you decide to serve finger foods for dinner. Whether you're having friends over for a casual get-together or if you're hosting a Super Bowl party, family cookout, or other special event, these meaty sausage appetizer recipes are sure to be a hit!

Simple Sausage Pinwheels

  • 1 roll of refrigerated biscuits
  • 1 roll of spicy sausage (1 pound)
  • Nonstick cooking spray

Spray a cutting board or baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Place the biscuits on the baking sheet or cutting board a few inches apart. With clean hands, flatten each biscuit, pressing together to form a single sheet of dough. Place the sausage on the dough and spread into a thin, even layer. Once the dough is covered with sausage, roll it up as if you were making a jelly roll. Once you have a large roll formed, cover it in plastic wrap and chill for two hours.

When the dough is chilled, start preheating your oven to 350 degrees and spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. While the oven is heating, remove the plastic wrap from the roll of sausage and cut into thin slices, about ¼ of an inch wide. Place the sliced sausage pinwheels on the baking sheet, leaving space between each one to allow for the dough to rise during baking. Bake the pinwheels for 20 minutes, or until dough is brown and sausage is completely cooked.

Serve warm. They are delicious served plain. You may also want to try sprinkling shredded cheddar on warm pinwheels before serving. If you are hosting a brunch or breakfast event, consider serving your favorite variety of jelly, jam, or marmalade with the pinwheels. Guests may also enjoy dipping them in honey or maple syrup.

Spicy Sausage and Cheese Dip

  • 1 roll of spicy sausage (1 pound)
  • 2 8-ounce packages of cream cheese
  • 2 cans of Rotel (your favorite flavor variety)

Crumble the sausage into a skillet and cook over medium heat until it is completely cooked. Stir throughout cooking, breaking it into small pieces. Drain the sausage. Place the sausage, cheese, and Rotel in a slow cooker. Allow to simmer on low for 4 hours. Stir thoroughly to combine prior to serving. Serve warm with tortilla chips, corn chips, or buttery crackers.

Alternative Preparation: For a different twist, you can use 16 ounces of Velveeta cheese instead of cream cheese in this recipe.
