3 Easy Sausage Meal Ideas

Updated on April 11, 2011

Are you looking for easy meal ideas? If you have a roll of sausage in your refrigerator or freezer, there are plenty of tasty dishes you can prepare for your family.

Of course, you can prepare sausage patties and serve them with eggs, hash browns, grits, biscuits, pancakes and other breakfast favorites – even if you’re preparing an evening meal. After all, most people enjoy having breakfast for dinner once in a while.

There are, however, plenty of other dishes you can make with prepared sausage. Preheat a skillet and brown a pound or so of crumbled sausage. By the time it’s cooked, you’ll have the base for one of these tasty meal ideas!

3 Simple Sausage Meal Ideas

1. "Homemade" Sausage Pizza

Think homemade pizza is too much work? It doesn’t have to be! Use crumbled cooked sausage as a topping for homemade pizza. You can use a pre-made crust, refrigerated crust, packaged mix or homemade crust. Whatever kind of crust you use, top with pizza or marinara sauce, shredded cheese and crumbled cooked sausage that has been drained. Add your favorite veggies, bake according to the crust package or recipe directions and enjoy!

Variation: For something different, use prepared Alfredo sauce rather than pizza or marinara sauce.

2. Hearty Sausage and Cheese Dip

It’s easy to make dip that can be a tasty side dish or appetizer, but that is also hearty enough to be a main dish using sausage and Velveeta or cream cheese. Simply place one pound of cream cheese or Velveeta and a pound of cooked crumbled sausage that has been drained into your slow cooker and add a can of tomatoes with green chilies (including liquid). Cover the slow cooker, set the temperature to low and allow it to simmer for 4 to 6 hours. Serve with corn chips, tortilla chips or hearty crackers.

Variation: When dip is ready, spoon portions of it into prepared mini pastry shells that have been cooked according to package directions. For more elegant bites, stir mushrooms that have been diced and cooked until crisp tender in olive oil or butter into the dip mixture before adding the dip to the shells.

3. Baked Sausage Rolls

This tasty dish can be a side dish, appetizer or main course. Open a container of refrigerated crescent roll dough. Place on a cookie sheet that has been coated with nonstick cooking spray. Press edges together and flatten until you have relatively thin sheet of dough. Sprinkle your favorite flavor of shredded cheese on half of the sheet of dough forming a thin layer. Sprinkle cooked sausage crumbles that have been drained on the cheese covered dough. Fold the other half of the dough over the top. Pinch edges together to form seal. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes, or until dough is brown and cooked through. Cool slightly; cut into squares to serve.

Variation: If you’d your rolls to be more like a stuffed pizza, spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the dough before adding cheese and place other traditional pizza toppings on the cheese (like peppers, onions, mushrooms, olives, etc. )
