A Delicious Ham and Bean Soup Recipe

Updated on October 30, 2011

This ham and bean soup recipe is easy to make and tastes great. The recipe calls for great northern beans, but you can substitute a different type of bean if you prefer such as navy beans or even lentils.

1 pound dry great northern beans
2 cups cubed ham cooked
1 chopped carrot
1 chopped celery rib
1 chopped onion
8 cups chicken broth
1 teaspoon of minced garlic
½ half teaspoon of salt
1 teaspoon of white pepper
2 tablespoons of butter
1 bay leaf

  1. Soak beans overnight. Discard water and rinse beans thoroughly.
  2. In a large pot melt butter over medium low heat and add the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic. Sauté for a few minutes until the vegetables are soft.
  3. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer covered until beans are tender, about 1-2 hours.
  4. Discard bay leaf.

This recipe sounds pretty easy. I love the fact that you can also customize it a bit by using different beans for instance.
