A&W Cream Soda Philippines

Updated on September 9, 2011

A&W Cream Soda

I'm not really much of a soda person. In fact, I try to avoid the caffeine and sugar that's in sodas if I can. One soda though that's been a favorite since I was a kid would be A&W's Cream Soda.

This drink isn't really that popular here in the Philippines and because it's not being produced here, the heavy tariffs on the imports and protectionism on local sodas make it very expensive and a bit hard to find. For instance, as of now, I only know two sources of where you can buy A&W Cream Soda in the Philippines and that is in S&R (where you can buy them in six packs) or in a gas station in SLEX (South Luzon Expressway) southbound right before the Sta. Rosa exit.

The reason that I am writing about this right now is because I really love this product. I am very partial to vanilla or anything creamy. It's really a lot like my kryptonite. I am the type who would choose white sauce over red sauce in pasta in a heartbeat. Creaminess in food, or in this case beverages, is really something I personally enjoy. I guess that's something I'll eventually discuss more in my food blog.

For a long while I didn't get to try this drink until very recently while walking around the gas station I mentioned near the Sta. Rosa exit. Since then I would usually pass by the said gas station before going to my house in Laguna.

It's really the most underrated and overlooked soda in the universe (probably only here). The taste is so heavenly and I love how the color is a lot like beer (it just sets itself apart from other sodas, I believe).

It's quite expensive though at 40 pesos a can. I'm not really sure about the price in S&R but yeah that's quite pricey compared to its local counterparts (but worth it, in my opinion).

Cream Soda photos I took with a bit of slow shutter to add trippy light effects. (this is actually an older design of the can that they recently changed).

A&W Cream Soda in the Philippines

I was researching on the ingredients and I saw that it has corn syrup instead of sugar. I remember reading about this (actually I listened to the audio book but it's somewhat the same, I guess) in Ron Paul's The Revolution: a Manifesto. There was a part where he talked about how heavy taxes and regulation on sugar forced American soda companies to switch to corn syrup instead. I don't remember the exact reasons but it's something along those lines. I don't really know which is healthier or whatever. I do know that A&W's taste is something I really love but this doesn't mean that I support any sort of statism. I just thought I'd share it because it's something I remembered while looking up the ingredients.

It's great to drink it while watching some of your favorite shows. In fact, that's what I did while watching the newest TV shows I watch. I actually watched a lot more than what's on those list and I'll surely write about them real soon. Oh yeah, I did watch Jersey Shore season 4 as well (it's really so funny and very entertaining). As you can see on the photos on the right I'm really enjoying the cream soda and the great combination with Tostillas (it's a local chips brand that tastes a lot like Doritos but way cheaper).

Maybe the government should really step back and be inviting to more soda companies to invest here and sell their products here. Not only will it be good for the competition and force soda companies to innovate, provide better service, and sell at more competitive prices, there will also be a lot of jobs created if ever. There used to be A&W restaurants here in the Philippines but there aren't anymore. I don't really know exactly what happened but I'm assuming it was an economic issue.

My Favorite A&W Cream Soda

The HubPages 30-day Challenge is really a good thing. Nowadays it seems that writing has become a habit of mine. It's as if I can't complete a day without updating or posting something new. Everywhere I go all I think about is what I can write about or share to the world (which has always been true but has been enhanced by the whole 30-day challenge thing as well).

You too can write here on HubPages and make some extra income just by writing about different experiences and sharing stories about the things you love (just like what I did now with A&W Cream Soda).

I hope you found this article helpful or at least entertaining. I was thinking that adding my own photos with the drink will make the blog post more personal and realistic and really show my sincerity about how much I love A&W Cream Soda. Goodnight, people of the internet.
