All about Food Allergies and Its Types

Updated on August 22, 2016

Many people get unfavorable response to some food, thus, they consider it a food allergy. It is basically a kind of an adverse immune response to a particular food protein. Sometimes we see people get affected with allergic rhinitis from eating an allergen. A food allergy is a kind of hypersensitivity to a substance, the problem isn't the food, it is the immune systems' reaction to that particular food. It’s the immune system that mis-identifies the food as virus, toxin and does whatever process is required to eliminate it from your body. When this happens, a whole set of chemical reactions are initiated.

Symptoms of Food Allergy:

Food allergy symptoms often show up after sixty minutes, you take something allergic. Most common symptoms of food allergy are

• Vomiting

• Rashes

• Nausea

• Diarrhea

• swollen lips

• reddening of the skin

Sometimes people got confused between food intolerance and food allergy. As Food intolerance and food allergy have the same symptoms but intolerance gives the milder reaction as compared to allergy. In case to avoid food allergy, it would be wise to read the food labels before taking it. There has been an increase in food allergy cases over years, mostly driven by common food items like:

In children, the most common food allergies are:

• Cow's milk

• Wheat

• Peanuts

• Tree nuts

• Soybeans

• Hen's eggs

In adults, the most common food allergies are:

• Peanuts

• Fish

• Crustaceans (such as shrimp, crabs, and lobster)

• Tree nuts

Food Allergy Types:

Three main types of allergies can be classified as follows:

• Acute symptomatic type 1

• Asymptomatic type 1

• Delayed type III

Don't just assume you are suffering from food allergy. If you suspect one, get it confirmed by the experts. You need to be doubly sure before you avoid eating nutritional foods. Certain people out there face nutritional problems due to ignorance of food not really allergic to. It's very rare case a person is allergic to more than one food.

One can lead to Psychological or emotional problems if food allergies are left untreated. People with the food allergy can suffer from inability to concentrate, depression as well as mood swings. Food addictions are fundamentally an indication of an allergy and of you are dependent on a specific food, the probability is that you are allergic to it. This is because those hypersensitive responses in the body trigger the arrival of specific chemicals, (for example, opioids) which make you feel great and make you want this specific food.
