An Easy and Tasty Homemade Banana Wine in 10 Days: A Healthy Wine For This Festive Season
Banana Wine: A Must Try at Home
Christmas season always has good memories because of the mindblowing aroma of baking, the variety of super tasty cakes, be it rich plum cakes or cream cakes, and last but not the least, the delicious grape wine.
Just for a change from the usual practice, I thought of making wine from bananas ( another major reason for this decision being the easy availability of bananas, especially in Kerala). I know it is a bit late to make wine now, but I just wanted to make sure that everything turned out well, and yes it did. I hope most of you might prefer grape wine for Christmas, so why not try this banana wine for New Year?
I'm sharing the recipe of a wine made of very few ingredients, and very little time, compared to the normal winemaking process, but the taste of which is simply superb.
Homemade Banana Wine

- 10 - 12 bananas, ripe
- 1 teaspoon yeast
- 1 liter water, cooled to room temperature after boiled
- 1 kilogram sugar
For the caramel syrup:
- 1 cup sugar
- 1 cup hot water
- To make wine, we usually use a large airtight ceramic pot. These are called "Bharani" in Kerala. Make sure that the pot used is free of moisture and is big enough so that the mixture we pour occupies only three-fourths of it.
- Boil the water and cool it, so that it is in room temperature while we start wine preparation.
- Cut ripe bananas into small round pieces. I've used Palayamkodan( a variety of banana available in Kerala), but any ripe banana can be used. The more ripe and sweet the bananas, the more delicious your wine. Also, make sure the knife and the cutting board used is free of moisture.
- Keep one cup of sugar aside from the total amount of sugar to be used at the final step. Now, from the remaining sugar, add half to the ceramic pot and then add half the pieces of bananas. Repeat the same process once again.
- Add one teaspoon of instant yeast to the pot. To this, add one liter of water. As mentioned in the description, make sure that the water is brought back to room temperature after boiling before it can be added to the pot.
- Now mix this thoroughly with a dry wooden spatula. Now close the pot such that it is airtight. You may opt for your method to do this. I've placed a cloth and then put the lid on top of it so that it is completely locked.
- Keep the pot in a cool and dark place and stir the mixture every other day for about five minutes. You may also smash the slices if necessary.
- After ten days, filter the wine using a cloth or sieve, and you may repeat the process to make it completely free of sediments.
- Caramelize one cup of sugar kept aside at the beginning by keeping it in low flame until golden brown. To this, add one cup of hot water and stir vigorously. It may create small noises. Now allow the caramel syrup to cool and add this to the filtered wine.
- Keep your banana wine in dry glass bottles. The more time you keep it, the tastier it would be. I hope you enjoy the wine. Happy New Year!
