Do you like the taste of apples? Do you like apple sauce? There is some good news for you. If you have some cake mixes laying around and a good can of apple sauce you can make a wonderful cake in minutes! (Not counting baking time of course.)

Of course, I highly suggest trying this with cakes from scratch as cake mixes are sometimes not the best sources of cake - however they are great for beginner bakers because they are really hard to ruin.

What Flavor Cake Mix?

It is very interesting to think of the versatility of this recipe. Apple has a very specific flavor - especially depending on the sauce you use. Make sure you look at what is in the sauce and think about what kind of cake it will turn out as.

Strawberry Cake Mix: I think some people are calling this Strappleberry, but it turns into a really nice rich fruit flavored cake.
Vanilla: The apple can dominate this cake, however the hints of vanilla that make it through add a nice tone to the flavors.
Spice Cake: This was made for each other. Spices and apples have been married for ages, and this combination really shows us why. Makes a great coffee cake.
Butter Pecan: Buttered apple is a nice flavor, and the slight nut flavor goes the extra mile for an interesting taste.

What To Change

Adding applesauce to the cake mix means that you can leave off all the other wet materials - even eggs. However I prefer to have eggs in mine most of the time. You should measure out enough sauce to replace the liquids taken out of the equation. Experiment to see what you like for a more moist or dry cake!

  1. Follow the Box instructions - but be sure to replace the wet ingredients with the apple sauce, you can keep the eggs in if you want.

Whatever you choose, from regular to fancy ingredients you can't feel bad with a starting price of around two dollars for a delicious cake!

The spice cake with applesauce sounds like it would be our favorite--thanks! I've used applesauce to replace oils in the past, but did not realize all liquids could be replaced with it.

Wonderful suggestions! My mother and I have used applesauce to keep a spice cake moist and eliminated a 1/2 cup of oil and a tom of calories.

I love the strawberry -- Strappleberry suggestion. Sharing.
