Are Omaha Steaks Worth the Cost? Or should you buy Organic Grass Fed Beef?

Omaha Steaks - Quality or Marketing?
Who mail orders meat? Well apparently Omaha Steaks – a company that has been in business since 1917 – has a pretty fanatical mail order business. Omaha Steaks also operates a number of retail outlets across the country.
Omaha justifies their prices with the claim their steaks are “Gourmet Quality”… and at $20 a pound for sirloin I would hope so! I’ve had the opportunity to enjoy the occasional steak, although I am not usually a red meat eater. And yes there is definitely a difference between restaurant grade beef and grocery store beef. Fortunately for me when I do eat beef I have an “in” that provides meat from a restaurant supply chain. So I’m not going to question the quality compared to grocery stores, but consider what you are really buying and what your alternatives are for about the same money. “Gourmet Quality” doesn’t man healthy as you’ll find out below.
Omaha Steaks - Quality or Marketing or Both?
The Omaha Steak Company makes no claims as to the source of their beef being superior only that it is “Gourmet Quality”… which is purely subjective. They do make claims that their beef is "safe"; but nowhere I could find that the processing is any different than any other feedlot processed beef. If you look at the way cattle are raised and processed in this country it would make you never want to eat beef again. Cows were never designed to eat corn. In fact the term “Corn Fed Beef” is a marketing term and has been twisted for the benefit of the Industry. Cows will not eat corn on their own in nature, as they are designed to eat grass. When a cow eats corn a whole host of bacteria infests their digestive tract that would otherwise not be present including e-coli.
A cow digests grasses in their rumen (40-50 Gallon!) where the grasses are fermented and gut friendly bacteria convert cellulose into proteins and fats Digestion of feed goes on by 500,000 billion bacteria and 50 billion protozoa living and multiplying there. This is just the first part of the digestive tract after the mouth. The stomach of ruminants has four compartments: the rumen, reticulum, omasum and abomasums. Collectively, these organs occupy almost 3/4ths of the abdominal cavity, filling virtually all of the left side and extending significantly into the right So why does this matter? Because the fatty acid profile of corn fed beef is much different than grass fed beef.
Seventy years ago, steers were 4 or 5 years old at time of slaughter. Today, they are only 14 or 16 months. You can't take a beef calf from a birth weight of 80 pounds to 1,200 pounds in a little more than a year on grass. It takes enormous quantities of corn, protein supplements, antibiotics and other drugs, including growth hormones. The end result, and this is what ends up on you plate, is corn fed beef full of growth hormones, protein supplements and antibiotics.
I’d encourage you to see the film Food, Inc. if you would like to learn more about how Cattle are processed and why there are so many beef recalled.

- Cattle's diet also significantly alters the fatty acid composition of their meat. Cattle fed primarily grass have 60 percent more omega-3 fatty acids and a more favorable omega-6 to omega-3 ratio.
- Raising cattle on grass boosts the beef's level of a conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), a lesser-known but important group of polyunsaturated fatty acids found in beef, lamb and dairy products.
- The amount of natural vitamin E found in beef raised on a conventional diet is 3.7 micrograms per gram of meat. The amount of vitamin E per gram in beef raised on the grass-based diet is 9.3 micrograms, a nearly threefold improvement.
- A three-ounce serving of grass-fed beef supplies 10 percent of the recommended dietary allowance of beta-carotene for women, compared to 5 percent from conventional beef.
Buy Organic Beef Direct Online or Locally
Why buy beef online (if you do that) from a conventional producer like Omaha Steaks when you can buy grass fed beef – even organic grass fed beef for the same or less money? If you are going to consume beef you might as well get the most nutritious health-friendly beef available. Just a few of the companies you may want to consider – all which you can find online.
- Dakota Beef Company
- Alderspring Ranch
- Lynn Brakke Organic Farms
- Coleman Organic
The point is this – if you want to be healthy you should take some time to really look at what you are eating and why you are eating it. Ignorance is not going to do you any good when your arteries and clogged and your heart is about to stop pumping. You are what you eat, and if you eat junk then your body responds accordingly.
Beef it’s what’s for dinner? Mmmm okay, but I think I’ll pass if it’s not grass fed.
FYI: I have never eaten an Omaha Steak so I can not tell you about the quality, but there is no evidence in their marketing literature that their beef is sourced from farms practicing Organic or even Natural Grass Fed farming practices. My preferred brand is Coleman Organic which when I want locally I can buy, but again I eat very little red meat.
