Alcohol sauce

Whether you use rum, bourbon or whiskey? A simple rum sauce makes anything amazing but is one of the great matches for warm bread pudding.

Basic Alcohol sauce

  • 1/4 cup to 1/2 cup alcohol, taste is up to you
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar or (half and half white & brown)
  • 1 stick real butter
  • 1/3 cup water

Bring all of this to a boil in a saucepan, med-high heat. You want it to thicken about 10 mins, or so. You can either add the alcohol so it cooks off the alcohol (of course leaving the flavoring) or you can wait to the end, after taking the pan off the burner.

Topping a serving of your pudding with an alcohol sauce sets it apart from anything else. At least is does for me. Adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream or dollop of homemade whipped heavy cream is - oh so good!

Simple, quick, basic and pure comfort.

Bread is a comfort food on it's own. Combine it with anything and you have a masterpiece. Anything you can imagine putting on bread, mixing with bread or adding bread to becomes a hit just because you have added the basis of comfort.

Same goes for eggs, cream / milk, sugar and poof, you have a absolutely scrumptious concoction that came straight from the frugal mind of those who hate waste.

Bread pudding is one of those excellent combinations. It's versatility is wide spread and it's addition to any one's southern comfort food list is a must.

Bread pudding owes itself to the simple idea of re using stale or old bread. Similar to the idea behind making french toast.

What is even more lovelier is that bread pudding is a kind of thrown together cuisine that no one can mess up. So, allowing that none cooking or baking person to help with this is great. It is also a great recipe in which children can help.

The basis of bread pudding is simple.

  • main ingredient - bread
  • liquid - milk
  • binder - eggs
  • sweetener - sugar

The choice of the types of any of these ingredients in up to you.

Bread pudding's versatility is notorious. You can add anything your imagination is willing to come up with, whatever you are willing to experiment with and how daring you are. Yet, the basic, less than five ingredient bread pudding can be a crowd pleaser on it's own. In any situation a good bread pudding makes it's presence known.

Basic ingredients

  • 3 cups - day old or fresh bread 1" cubes
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 2 to 3 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cup of sugar

  1. In bowl beat eggs
  2. Mix in milk
  3. Stir in sugar
  4. Add bread cubes, to soak
  5. Pour everything in buttered dish, before or after bread is soaked
  6. Put in fridge or leave on counter for bread to become moist, and soft
  7. Put dish in preheated oven at 350 degrees for 45 mins to 65 mins.

When done, either insert tooth pick in center or press with finger, when the center is set it will be firm to touch, springing back.

You don't want your bread pudding to be dry or the custard or pudding to be too firm, but you want to make sure it is cooked through. Sometimes covering with foil after it is browned on top helps to reduce drying out and burning.

  • fruit, raisins, peaches, etc
  • nuts, pecans

Experiment your imagination and taste buds make anything possible.

Great thing about bread pudding is it can be baked or steamed in a water bath.

It can be whipped up in less than 15 to 20 mins and finished within an hour, from gathering ingredients, doing prep work, stirring and baking.

It can be eaten hot out of the oven or at room temperature. It can be cooked in individual servings or in large pans. The choice is always yours, but believe me when i say that no matter how you serve it up, make sure you have enough for seconds.

Enjoy bread pudding whenever you want. It can be eaten for breakfast or dessert.

Bread pudding is a wonder it can be served as a compliment to a family gathering, simple buffet or as an accompaniment to an extravagant four course meal.

However you want it, bread pudding is a great cost effective comfort food that makes one feel loved.

One tip - it is important for the bread to be soaked well with the egg milk custard, the texture of bread pudding should be dense but creamy.

Another tip - beating the eggs well helps with the consistency of the custard.

Quick history, some versions of bread pudding date back to ancient Egyptian times. That version is known as Om Ali. Om Ali is made with bread, milk, almonds, and raisins. There are versions known to have been made by the Romans, Middle Eastern and Indian cultures, as well.

But i suspect wherever you can find frugal cooks you will find some type of bread pudding recipe!
