Beneficial foods for you

Updated on February 5, 2012

There is so much hype about what’s good food and what’s not. Since I’ve had problems with reflux I’ve experimented with different foods. I’ve also read up on a lot of different foods and their benefits to our body. I’ve compiled a list below

Barley grass

Barley grass is a seedling of barley plant. It is usually sold in a green powdery form or in tablet form. If you buy it in its powdery form like I do you can either mix it in juice or sprinkle it over your cereal. I tend to mix in apple juice and it works wonders for me.

Nutritional Value

It is said that it has three dozen vitamins and minerals. It is rich in Vitamin A,C,B1,B2 and folic acid. It also has iron, potassium, calcium and chlorophyll. Barley grass is the only plant food that provides the nine amino acids that your body can’t produce.

Barley grass benefits

My own personal experience with barley grass is that it has reduced my acid reflux tremendously, to the point I don’t take omeprazole unless absolutely necessary. You have to take it over a few days before you begin to see any benefits. Barley grass is also a powerful antioxidant. It is said that it can help the body kill cancer cells; it is also know to help heal ulcers. Barley grass is also high in chlorophyll. Chlorophyll helps oxygenate the blood. It binds with toxins like heavy metals in the blood and moves them away and are processed.

Finally barley grass can be used to detox the body. It will help rid all the toxins in the body which will help you feel better in general. When starting with barley grass start with low dosage and then increase gradually to avoid the full effects of detoxing.

Goji Berries

I love these and they taste wonderful in a bowl of oats. This is how I eat mine. This is another superfood that I’ve found. I’ve read that Goji berries have more Vitamin C than oranges, more iron than steak and more beta carotene than carrots. Beta carotene is thought to help fight heart disease, defend against cancer and protect the skin from heat damage.

Gobi berries have compounds rich in Vitamin A that could have anti- aging benefits. A friend of mine form China did advise me to go easy on these super berries. Eating too many could cause diarrhea, indigestion and sometimes nausea. You should also be careful of allergic reactions to the berries. I only sprinkle a few over my cereal every other day just to be safe.

Dates

These are another favourite of mine but in small doses. They are great nourishment for muscle development so would fit nicely into a body builder’s diet. They are high in calories and can help you put on body mass and muscle. Dates give extra energy, you will begin to feel energy within half an hour of eating them. It’s a better alteranative to chocolate and other empty high calorie foods.

Dates can also act as a mild laxative. Instead of using over the counter laxatives instead eat dates. Try eating dates on a regular basis to aid with constipation; they are high in dietary fibre which helps clear the colon.

Black rice

I was introduced to black rice the first time early this year when I had an oriental vegetable mixed meal with white and black rice. I loved the way it made the dish look so appetising and I also loved the taste. Because I’d never had black rice before I decided to do a little research of my own about it.

It was known as the emperor’s rice as the normal folk were not allowed to eat this rice. Black rice is said to help prevent:

Cancer

Diabetes

Heart disease

Alzheimer’s

A spoonful of black rice contains anthocyanin antioxidants that help fight heart disease, cancer and other diseases. It’s is also a good source of fibre and it is said to be the new brown rice. After I’d had that delicious meal I sought to buy black rice myself. I couldn’t find it in the local supermarkets but did manage to find it at Harvey Nichols. Cooking it can be tricky, because I wanted to have the black and white mix, the first time I didn’t think to separate the two. So I cooked both together and that just turned my white rice purple. So the second time around I cooked the two separately. I’m not sure why I didn’t do that in the first place.

I hope you will find the superfoods that make you feel better from the inside out.
